BioShock 2 Protector Trials finally comes to the PC (for free) Monday

bioshock 2
BioShock 2 PC players have been waiting patiently for developer 2K Marin and publisher 2K Games to release the final two DLC packs for the first person shooter. This weekend the Cult of Rapture community site announced that the Protector Trials DLC pack will finally be made available to download for PC port owners on Monday.

The Protector Trials download, which will be free to BioShock 2 PC owners, add six new levels as players fight off waves of Splicers in the Big Daddy suit. The DLCV pack will also come with a patch for the game that will fix a few issues. The final DLC pack, Minerva's Den, still does not have a PC release date.

BioShock 2 Protector Trials PC mistakenly released (but it doesn't work)

BioShock 2's PC players have been waiting (and waiting) for publisher 2K Games to fullfill its promise of releasing the remaining DLC content for the 2010 first person shooter. Now it looks like some players downloaded the game's Protector Trial DLC ahead of its official release.

According to forum posts on the BioShock 2 message boards, the DLC appeared in the Games For Windows Marketplace, priced at $5.75. However while some players have purchased and downloaded the DLC, no one has been able to actually play it, suggesting that the game itself needs a patch in order to access the content. 2K Games' community manager has confirmed that the DLC wasn't supposed to be out yet, saying, " ... wait till my word before you go grab it - it's not ready yet."

Ken Levine completes his portion of BioShock novel

Irrational Games' head man Ken Levine has now completed the promised task of providing the forward for BioShock Rapture, the long awaited prose novel that will serve as a back story for the events in the BioShock and BioShock 2 first person shooters.

On his personal Twitter page, Levine wrote, "I wrote my tiny corner of the BioShock novel last night. Hard to describe the feeling of writing for Ryan again after 3 years." He's referring to Andrew Ryan, the creator of the underwater city of Rapture at the heart of the first two games in the BioShock series. When asked by another person if it was hard to write the character again Levine replied with, "It wasn't difficult, but I had to say something about him that I hadn't said already. I think I found a tiny, tiny new corner."

As we have reported before the BioShock prose novel was first announced back in 2009. John Shirley wrote the bulk of the novel
and it's currently scheduled to be released via Tor Books in July.

Bioshock: Rapture novel delayed again to July release

Last month we reported that Bioshock: Rapture, the upcoming novel that tells the back story of the first two Bioshock first person shooters, was finally scheduled for release in March. Now it looks like we will have to wait a few more months for the novel from Tor Books to be released.

Amazon.com now shows that the novel has been pushed back until July 19. As we reported before, the novel is written by John Shirley but will have an introductory chapter by Irrational Games' head man Ken Levine. It is supposed to tell the story of how Andrew Ryan first created the underwater city of Rapture, the setting for the first two games in the series.

BioShock 2 PC DLC gets release info update

Last October, 2K Games announced that PC owners of the first person shooter BioShock 2 would be getting the final two DLC packs for the game after initial plans to offer them were canceled. This week the game's official message boards finally offered an update on when the DLC packs will be released via a post from 2K Games' community manager.

The update stated that the certification for the Protector Trials DLC is slated to be done "at the end of January." The final DLC pack, which adds the new single player campaign Minerva's Den, is now scheduled to go to certification "in the beginning of March." Once the DLC packs go through the certification process, release date info should soon follow.

Bioshock prose novel now scheduled for March 2011 release

Some of you may remember that back in 2009 plans were revealed for a prose novel to be written based on the Bioshock game series from developer Irrational Games. However the novel from publisher Tor Books pretty much from sight. Now Amazon.com and Tor's parent company Macmillan both have a new listing for the novel, titled Bioshock: Rapture, stating it will be released on March 1.

The novel is written by John Shirley but will have an introductory chapter by Irrational Games' head man Ken Levine. It will feature the back story of how the underwater city of Rapture was established by Andrew Ryan. The novel will be released both in hardcover and trade paperback format, each with different cover art work. The novel was supposed to be released around the time of BioShock 2's release in early 2010 but according to a post credited to Shirley on the 2K Games' BioShock message boards the decision was made to incorporate characters and plot points from Bioshock 2 into the novel. That caused an additional 30,000 words to be put into the book.
