Mid-week PC game deals include Bionic Commando Rearmed on Steam

If you like saving money, you will be happy to know that Steam's mid-week madness events are now back on track after a hiatus due to the big holiday sales period. From now until Thursday you can download and purchase the original Bionic Commando Rearmed side-scroller retro action game from publisher Capcom for just $4.99, a 50 percent price cut from its normal price (by the way Capcom has yet to announced plans to release the upcoming sequel to Bionic Commando Rearmed which is due out for consoles later in 20110).

Meanwhile, Impulse has put one of its games on sale for today only. The adventure game Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle is on sale for just $7.49, another 50 percent price cut.

No Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 for PC?

The good news? Capcom has indeed confirmed that Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is in the works. The sequel to the downloadable 2.5D side scroller is being developed by Fatshark who just released their first game Lead and Gold: Tales of the Wild West.

The bad news? The game was announced as coming for the Xbox 360 and PS3 but not for the PC, unlike the original which was released back in 2008. We have emailed Capcom to get an official response but keep in mind that the publisher has a history of both announcing and releasing their PC game ports after they appear on consoles
.

Rumor: Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 in development?

Capcom held its annual big press event this past week (in no less a location than Hawaii). While we did not attend, it looks like those media sites that did are under embargo until Tuesday. However it looks like some details from the event are starting to slip out anyway. One of them comes from PlanetXbox360.com which claims Capcom announced plans for Bionic Commando Rearmed 2.

The original game, released in 2008, was basically a 2.5D remake of the first side-scroller Bionic Commando game with some updated graphics and features. So any sequel to that title would likely be an all new game. Oddly enough, the development team behind Bionic Commando Rearmed at the now defunct GRIN has just announced their reformation as Might and Delight. Coincidence?

Bionic Commando Rearmed dev team forms Might&Delight

While the major revival of Bionic Commando wasn't a big financial success, the downloadable remake of the original game as Bionic Commando Rearmed was both a critical and sales success. Now the team responsible for that game has formed their own development studio in Sweden, Might&Delight (or Might and Delight; they seem to go by both monikers).

The team was formerly part of GRIN which shut down operations just after the release of Bionic Commando. While the team isn't talking about their first project under their new organization they seem to hint it will be some kind of downloadable release with a retro bend. Hmmm . . .sounds familiar.

Big Download's 2009 Budget Multiplayer Game Holiday Guide

Yesterday, we listed our picks for some great multiplayer games to play over the holidays. However, the thing about PC games is that you usually need an individual copy for each computer to play. It gets really expensive to shell out $40-50 per game to give as gifts. It can also be difficult to convince friends and family to buy those games for themselves.

Big Download knows your pain, and we've got you covered. Here are our top picks for multiplayer games that cost $20 or less, but provide plenty of fun for the holiday season. Some of these games might go on sale in the next few weeks for even more savings. Now you can spend less time worrying about what you can afford and more time planning that gaming get together.

GRIN officially shuts down; blames publishers for late payments

Even with the release of three major games in the space of a few months this year, the Stockholm-based game developer GRIN could not stave off extinction. Today the company's official web site has now admitted it will close its doors after shutting down two of its satellite development teams earlier this year.

In its farewell message, GRIN blamed unarmed publishers it worked with for its demise saying, " . . . many publishers have been delaying their payments, causing an unbearable cashflow situation." It doesn't look like one of those publishers is Capcom; the company's two founders Bo and Ulf Andersson thanked the publisher of their Bionic Commando game "for being honest, a rare gift" in their farewell message. GRIN also had two other games come out this year; Wanted: Weapons of Fate (from Universal's interactive division) and Terminator Salvation (from Evolved Games).

GRIN released a couple of smaller PC games in the early part of this decade; the futuristic racer Ballistics and the post apocalyptic racer Bandits. Later Ubisoft hired GRIN to create the two PC ports for the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series before they were signed to multiple console-PC products. In their farewell message, GRIN's founder makes mention of "our unreleased masterpiece that we weren't allowed to finish" indicating they were indeed working on a new game project before their shut down.

Bionic Commando Rearmed finally available on Steam

This week's shipment of the PC port of Bionic Commando to stores and also via digital download has had an interesting side-effect. Publisher Capcom has used this week to finally debut last year's downloadable only game Bionic Commando Rearmed on Steam. Some of you may remember that at the last minute Capcom decided not to release the 3D remake of the original game via Steam nearly a year ago because Capcom said they were "unable to reach mutually agreeable terms with Valve".

Apparently those conflicts have been resolved and Steam is now offering Bionic Commando Rearmed for $10. In addition you can download and purchase both Bionic Commando and Bionic Commando Rearmed in a combo pack for $44.99, a savings of $5 if they were purchased separately. If you get the bundle you also get some special Bionic Commando extras, including "the "Retro" Nathan "Rad" Spencer skin, a Prototype Weapon and a secret room in the Fissure level". In a related bit of news, Bionic Commando's soundtrack is now available for purchase via digital download.

Capcom sees profits grow in latest quarter

Yet another game publisher announced their quarterly financial results this week. According to our sister site Game Daily, Japan-based Capcom announced that profits from its latest fiscal quarter that ended Sept. 30 were 1.873 billion yen, which is 16.8 percent from the same period a year ago. A big reason for the jump were sales in Japan for their PSP game Monster Hunter Freedom 2G which has sold 2.5 million units.

Capcom plans to release a number of their games for the PC in the next several months including Bionic Commando, Dark Void and Street Fighter IV. In addition downloadable games like Age of Booty and Flock are also planned. As we reported earlier this week there's also a rumor that Resident Evil 5 might make it to the PC but so far Capcom has not officially announced it for that platform.

New TGS Bionic Commando screenshots appear

The Tokyo Game Show is mostly for console game released but there are a few PC and multiplatform titles out there. Case in point is Bionic Commando, the upcoming full sequel to Capcom's action game franchise. The publisher sent out some new TGS screenshots showing off more images from the title.

Developed by GRIN, the third person action game was supposed to be out this fall but got pushed back until 2009. Until then the remake of the original game, Bionic Commando Rearmed, is available for download now (although Capcom has yet to offer a free demo of the title, alas). In the meantime these new screens will have to do.
