Review: Fallout New Vegas

The Fallout series reminds us that "War never changes," which is essentially a shorter way of saying, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." The saying can be easily applied to Fallout: New Vegas, which looks and plays almost identically to Fallout 3. Changes include an all new Wasteland located in the Mojave desert, populated with fresh characters and creatures. There are also some additions to the skills, perks, and weapons selection, although the majority is carried over directly from Fallout 3. So, if you had major problems with what the previous game had to offer, there's not much New Vegas has to offer that will change your opinion. However, if you're looking for a strong follow-up, then it's time to hit the strip, but be prepared to face some serious technical problems.

Fallout New Vegas PC's second patch released

Fallout New Vegas' PC owners are getting some rapid fire patch support for the just released post-apocalypse RPG. The game just got its second patch about 24 hours after the release of the first patch for the game.

As with the first patch, released via Steam, there are no detailed patch notes. The note on the Steam web site does say, "Preferences, quicksaves, and autosaves should behave normally." That should be a relief to some players that have reported playing the game and then having issues with save games. However, it looks like Steam Cloud support for save game isn't working as the note states, "Cloud support currently disabled."

Fallout New Vegas PC's first patch released via Steam

Fallout New Vegas PC owners just got the first patch for the newly released post-apocalypse RPG via Steam. At the moment there's little info on what the patch contains with the Steam web site stating only that the patch "quest and scripting issues."

Hopefully this patch will deal with some of the game's more immediate issues that have reportedly causes some in-game crashes along with some save game issues. Earlier today Bethesda Softworks' PR head told us that it would be releasing patches for all of Fallout New Vegas' three platforms soon so perhaps the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will be getting their own patches soon.

Fallout New Vegas bug fixes coming in patch

Fallout New Vegas' reviews has been mostly on the positive side so far. However there have been a number of reports that the just released post-apocalypse RPG from developer Obsidian Entertainment has a number of bugs and other issues. Kotaku has listed some of those issues that have been discovered so far which include some ... interesting .... tricks with heads.

Big Download contacted the game's publisher Bethesda Softworks to find out when the first bug fix patch for Fallout New Vegas would be released. Its PR head Pete Hines emailed back this response: "We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms. Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming." Any patches for the PC port will be issued automatically via Steam.

Fallout New Vegas PC mod tools released

Fallout New Vegas is now out in the wild and so far the reviews seem to be mostly on the positive side. But if you are a PC game mod maker you might not care about reviews for the post-apocalypse RPG. All you care about is, "Will there be mod tools released for Fallout New Vegas?".

The answer is, "You betcha". In fact Bethesda Softworks has already released the game's version of the Garden of Eden Creation Kit (otherwise known as G.E.CK) where PC gamers can start making their own content for the Obsidian Entertainment title. This new version of G.E.C.K. has a new Dialogue Editor and more details can be found in the G.E.C.K Wiki web page.

Fallout: New Vegas dev diary explores voice content

The voice talent brought in for Fallout: New Vegas is simply staggering, and the folk at Obsidian really want you to know that. This new developer diary goes through the list of the most notable characters in the game, from the man that tried to kill you to the New Vegas version of Three Dog. In short, it's incredible the people they got for the role.

Naturally, Ron Perlman makes his return as the gravelly-voiced narrator. Matthew Perry (of Friends fame) plays the man who tried to kill you, while William Sadler (of Roswell fame) plays the robot Victor. Finally, Wayne Newton himself - Mr. Las Vegas - plays as DJ Mr. New Vegas, which references both his old job and his old title. It's a cast of very well-known actors for what will no doubt be an interesting game, and this dev diary makes sure you know that!

Rage would have been rushed into release without Zenimax, says id's Willits

When Zenimax Media purchased id Software back in May 2009, id's next game Rage was still under the publishing wing of Electronic Arts. However in December 2009 it was announced that EA had decided to turn over the publishing duties of the upcoming first person shooter to id's new owners under the Bethesda Softworks label.

As it turns out, that decision will (hopefully) help to make Rage a better game. Without naming EA directly, id Software's creative director Tim Willits told Gamesindustry.biz, "I can tell you that if we weren't part of the Zenimax family, we'd be trying to rush this game out." Having Zenimax and Bethesda Softworks take over publishing gave id the freedom to say " ... let's get the multiplayer awesome, let's get the game as great as we can make it. Without their support, I honestly think that Rage would not be as good as it's going to be." Rage is currently set for release in September 2011.

Fallout New Vegas launch event parties down in (where else) Vegas

We are just a couple of days away from the release of Fallout New Vegas to stores but this weekend it was time to party in the real Las Vegas for the RPG's official launch party. The event for the game included a performance by Vampire Weekend which Bethesda Softworks' PR head Pete Hines managed to take a picture of and post on his Twitpic account. The launch event for the Obsidian Entertainment-developed game also had a number of Hollywood actors attending including some that voiced characters in Fallout New Vegas.

Speaking of which, USA Today has some little known info about the game in a new Game Hunters blog post (semi-spoiler alert) including the reveal of another voice actor. William Mapother, cousin of Tom Cruise and best known for his creepy role as Ethan on the TV show Lost, voices Colonel Hsu of the game's New California Republic faction.

Fallout: New Vegas dev diary video hits the Vegas Strip

The most recognizable aspect of Las Vegas is the Vegas Strip, lined with its multitude of casinos. So it should be no surprise that it will be receiving the most attention in Fallout: New Vegas. Players will be able to take in the sights with the signature retro 1950s post apocalyptic sci-fi theme and pick up missions. Security robots patrol the streets day and night, so wanderers will have to be careful where they draw their weapons. Of course, this is Vegas, so players can try their luck at various games to try to get ahead. It remains to be seen whether or not players will be able to get special abilities that will help give that special edge... maybe a card shark skill or the ability to hack slot machines, but fans won't have to wait long to find out. Fallout: New Vegas releases next week on October 19th.

Fallout New Vegas' printed strategy guide is THIS BIG

As we all await next week's release of Fallout New Vegas, the post-apocalypse RPG from developer Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Bethesda Softworks is also getting a printed strategy guide from Prima Publishing. Actually it's getting two of them; a regular paperback version and an expanded hardcover collector's edition.

While professional game strategy guides tend to be a bit on the verbose side anyway, it looks like the one for Fallout New Vegas (written by veteran game strategy guide author David Hodgson) could be the biggest one yet printed. In a post on his Twitter page, Bethesda Softworks' PR head Pete Hines states, "The Fallout: New Vegas strat guide is 525,000 words, making it (apparently) the biggest game strat guide ever, and longer than War and Peace." (of course some online strategy guides could have an even bigger word count). The regular and collector's strategy guides will be released alongside the game on October 19.
