BattleForge has recently become a free-to-play game, making it the perfect time to try out this online real-time strategy game.

Electronic Arts' recent fantasy RTS game Battleforge launched just a couple of months ago but today the publisher has announced that the title has had a major shift in its launch. The entire game is now available to download from the Battleforge's web site as it shifts to a free to play game.

What does this mean, exactly? It means that the download client contains the entire version of the game; all the maps and scenarios and the ability to buy Booster Cards and bid on cards in the game's Auction House. It also contains 32 of the game's cards. However the free-to-play version does not contain any Battleforge points (which are earned in the game and can be used to purchase more cards).

The $29.99 retail version of the game is still being sold in stores. The retail game's code can now be redeemed for 3000 Battleforge points and 64 of the game's cards in its starter deck in the downloadable free-to-play version. You can also buy multiple versions of the retail version and use the code to buy more points and to get multiple cards.

We've noted that Electronic Arts' recent fantasy RTS game BattleForge hasn't gotten a lot of attention past it's release in late March. Apparently EA wants to change that situation. They have sent out a press release this morning announcing that the game has gotten a permanent price cut. Originally released for $49.99, the game is now available for just $29.99.

As we mentioned yesterday, the game is getting a major update today (via its auto-updater) that will add two new single player based maps to the full game. If you want to try out the title you can download the demo client right here at Big Download.

BattleForge was released to stores last March but since then the multiplayer oriented RTS game hasn't gotten much attention from the mainstream gaming media. However the developer at EA's Phenomic studio have been releasing regular updates to the game's auto-updater and tomorrow they plan to launch a major content update.

The update will include the first live campaign since the game's launch. The Renegade campaign will consist of two new PvE maps; a single player map called Mo ( which "follows the White Juggernaut Mo as he embarks on the search for his only friend, Twinaxe") and a four player map called Blight (which features Mo's arch-enemy Captain Blight). The BattleForge servers will be shut down briefly on Tuesday to prepare for the launch of the new content.

After three weeks of seeing Empire: Total War on top of the NPD Group's top 10 best selling PC games in US retail stores, the mighty 800 pound Blizzard gorilla regained the top spot for the latest NPD list. For the week that ended March 28, the MMO expansion World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King regained the number one position from the The Creative Assembly-Sega. historical RTS title. That game landed at the number two position this week.

Surprisingly, no new games appeared on the NPD list this week, despite the fact that a number of major new titles (Stormrise, Wheelman, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Battleforge and The Last Remnant) shipped to stores for the PC during the week of March 28. Oddly enough, Battleforge seems to be doing much better as a downloadable title. IGN's official blog has the RTS game from Phenomic and EA as the number one best selling game for its release week on its Direct2Drive site and at number two for the week ending April 4.

The last full week in March brings a number of major PC retail and downloadable titles down the pike along with a big downloadable expansion:
Stormrise - The Creative Assembly releases this original sci-fi RTS game for publisher Sega featuring battles on a future Earth between technological and biological-themed factions. If you just have Windows XP and DirectX9 installed, you can ignore this game; it's one of the very few that's a Windows Vista-DirectX10 exclusive.
