EA: New Battlefield game (possibly free-to-play) gets revealed Friday

Electronic Arts is close to revealing a new game in its long running Battlefield shooter series. In his Twitter page, EA's Ben Cousins posted up word that he is "Flying to London later today to show a new, unannounced #Battlefield game to the press. News goes public on Friday. (NOT #BF3)."

Cousins is the head of EA's Easy division which oversees three of EA's free-to-play PC game titles including Battleforge, Lord of Ultima and Battlefield Heroes. Because of this association it's more than likely that the new Battlefield game being revealed on Friday will also fall into the free-to-play realm.

Battlefield Heroes promotes Medal of Honor with in-game items

Medal of Honor is about a month away from its release but this week another Electronic Arts game is helping to promote the first person shooter in an unique way. The free-to-play shooter Battlefield Heroes (developed by Medal of Honor's multiplayer creator Digital Illusions) is offering some Medal of Honor-related in-game items.

The items let players dress up their characters as Tier 1 Elite or Tier 1 Specialist soldiers as well as weapons like the M-16 and M-21 assault rifles. More in-game items like the Tier 1 Operative and Captain are "coming soon". The in-game items will be available for Battlefield Heroes players from now until November 2. You can check out a trailer showing the Medal of Honor items after the jump.

Battlefield Heroes has special offers for first birthday

One year ago this week, developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts officially launched Battlefield Heroes, the free-to-play quasi-WWII shooter. Since the launch EA states that the game has had over 4.8 million registered players. Those players have generated over 29 million hours of gameplay and made 1.2 billion virtual in-game kills.

The game is celebrating its first birthday by offering its players a special promo code that will generate an XP and VP boost for two days along with 25 Terrific Health Tonics. The code is 49TP-ZJB7-NVTR-P8AE and can be redeemed on this web site until June 30. In addition you can purchase 20 percent more Battle Funds for the same price until June 30.

Battlefield Heroes has a double XP weekend starting Friday

Digital Illusions' free-to-play third person multiplayer shooter Battlefield Heroes is doing something this weekend it has never done before. Starting on Friday at 11 am Eastern time the game will let players get double the normal amount of experience points while playing the game. That's something that Activision has done occasionally with the Call of Duty games.

The double XP feature is not automatic. You will have enter the following code into the game's redeem web page to get the extra experience points boost: 5RH4-G9WR-MVV2-Q4E7. The double XP time period will end at 5:59 pm Eastern time on Sunday.

Battlefield Heroes adds new map, gameplay mode and jet packs

It's no secret that jet packs are cool, in both real life and in games. Digital Illusions knows this which is why they have added the ability for players to use jet packs in their free-to-play multiplayer shooter Battlefield Heroes. The new items will allow players to fly over buildings and other tall objects in the game's maps.

Along with the jet packs, the development team has added a new gameplay mode, V2 Vengence. The mode, which also comes with a new map called Midnight Mayhem, lets the two opposing teams try to capture and then defend V2 rocket launch facility. A team can win a match if they capture and then hold the facility for five minutes.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 crosses over into Battlefield Heroes

Digital Illusions' recent multiplayer shoter Battlefield Bad Company 2 is invading the space of another DICE's developed game, the free-to-play multiplayer shooter Battlefield Heroes. Starting today you will be able to purchase new outfits and weapons for both sides of the game based on Battlefield Bad Company 2.

There are six new weapons to purchase along with a extra stamina boost that adds 10 points to your character's health. You can also get 700 free Battlefunds to use in Battlefield Heroes if you own Battlefield Bad Company 2. You can check out the new outfits and weapons in the YouTube video above this post. They will be available to purchase until April 19.

Battlefield 3 "will blow people away" says former CEO of DICE

In June of 2009, an executive at Electronic Arts confirmed that Digital Illusions was indeed working on Battlefield 3 and that it was "a product that is looking very good." Now comes word from another source that the next game in the multiplayer shooter series is not only looking good, but that "it's going to absolutely blow everyone away."

Those words come from former DICE CEO Fredrik Liliegren, who left the developer in 2006 to help form a browser-based PC development studio called Antic Entertainment. However, in a chat with Gaming Union, he states that he still knows what DICE has planned for Battlefield 3, saying, " I can't tell you what it is, but it will blow people away." Strong words, especially from a source that hasn't been a part of DICE for over three years.

Battlefield Heroes pitting vampires against werewolves for next month

Someone at Digital Illusions must like the Underworld movies. The developer has announced that their free-to-play shooter Battlefield Heroes is giving its players a chance to fight not as pseudo WWII combatants but as either vampires or werewolves. The special in-game event lasts for the next month.

Players can purchase special werewolf or vampire clothing and appearance bundles in the Battlefield Heroes online store. Those bundles include special attacks; the Wolf Claw (for the werewolves) or the Vampire Claw (for the vamps, natch). In addition three of the game's maps have been converted to a spooky night setting. Sorry, no Kate Beckinsale in tight leather is available. You can check out a trailer after the jump.
