Review: Magicka

On its surface, Magicka comes off as a humorous take on hack-and-slash role-playing game, where players can come together, combine their skills and spells, and overcome any challenge the game has to throw at them. The game is all these things, but can also deceptively tricky to play. This is mainly due to its unique control system, where players manipulate eight different elements to combine into spells of varying effects. Wizardry takes a lot of memorization, speed and coordination to ensure a spell that won't blow up in your character's face. Things become even more exciting when more players join, as crossing the wrong spells might wipe out the entire team, but that's really part of the fun.

Magicka gets new update and infomercial ... really

Magicka seems to have struck a nerve with PC game fans. The humor-filled fantasy action-RPG from developer Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Paradox Interactive remains on top of Steam's best seller list, beating out games like Call of Duty Black Ops, Dead Space 2, and DC Universe Online.

Today the game also got its latest patch update via Steam. This is the third bug fix update that the game has received since it was first released last Tuesday. There are still some known issues, however, such as the chat feature being "awkwardly positioned" and some network congestion on high-ping connections.

In the meantime check out this "infomercial" for Magicka. Like the game, it doesn't take itself seriously:

Magicka sells over 30,000 copies in first day of sales

Magicka, the first stand alone game in 2011 for publisher Paradox Interactive, seems to be doing pretty well sales wise. The humor-filled fantasy action-RPG from developer Arrowhead Game Studios has already sold over 30,000 copies in the game's first 24 hours, according to a press release issued today.

The $9.99 game is also dealing with some launch bugs, some of which have been fixed with a patch via Steam that was released on Tuesday. Paradox and Arrowhead have promised that more patches and updates are coming with the press release saying, " .. updating the multiplayer lobby and continuously improving the game is our top priority."

Magicka released with Steam demo version; launch bugs discovered [Update]

As promised last Friday, developer Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Paradox Interactive has released its humor-filled fantasy action-RPG game Magicka. The Steam version also comes with Steamworks achievements and a demo version as well. If you purchase the game before January 31 you will also get three exclusive in-game items as well as an exclusive "magick" spell.

Unfortunately a number of players have encountered some serious bug issues with Magicka. This message board post has a list of some of the more serious bugs including an issue early in the game where the tutorial won't update. A post from a Paradox rep on the message board states, " ... our developers are aware of the crashes people are experiencing and we will release a patch as soon as we can. We apologize for any inconvenience and thanks for the support."

Update: The first patch for the game is now available to download on Steam.

Exclusive: Magicka to be released on Tuesday January 25

Big Download has learned that Magicka, the fantasy action-RPG, now has a firm release date. The PR rep for the game's publisher Paradox Interactive informed us today that the game from developer Arrowhead Game Studios will be released via various download services this Tuesday, January 25.

This game is a bit of a departure from Paradox who normally releases strategy and sim games. This is a fantasy action-RPG with a lot of humor as it plans to poke some fun at the genre that started with Blizzard's first Diablo game. Magicka is also going to be pretty cheap; its currently scheduled price point is just $9.99.

Magicka to get closed beta test ... but there's a twist for entry

Magicka is set for release in early 2011 but before then the development team at Arrowhead Games and publisher Paradox Interactive are holding a closed beta test for the upcoming fantasy action-RPG. But in the humorous spirit of the game getting into the beta will require something more than just filling out a form.

Entry into the beta test means that you have to take a picture of yourself wearing some kind of robe. Then you go over to the official Magicka Facebook page, "Like" it and then upload the picture to its wall. Folks who get picked to the closed beta will be notified in the next two to three weeks.

Magicka delayed to first quarter 2011

An upcoming fantasy action-RPG with a humorous bent is going to take a bit longer to be released. Publisher Paradox Interactive has announced that Magicka is now due for release in the first quarter of 2011 rather than a third quarter 2010 date. In its press release today, Paradox made light of the release date change, saying, "A game is never late, nor is it early, it arrives precisely when it's meant to."

The publisher also announced the launch of a new web site for Magicka as well as a new trailer (via GameTrailers.com) which attempts to explain the game's delay in Magicka's paten pending way. You can check out the trailer after the jump.

Magicka trailer shows a game unlike any other... or is it?

Magicka is a action fantasy game that satirizes action RPG adventures. In it, up to four players can come together and combine their powers to cooperatively overcome great obstacles - although it's quite possible for allies to fall "accidentally" fall victim to friend-fire. This humor-themed action adventure game is expected to release sometime late this year. Continue after the jump to watch another trailer and an interview with developer Johan Pilestedt, CEO of the Arrowhead Games Studios, who goes in-depth on the gameplay features of Magicka.

"In Magicka, up to four players take on a grand adventure to save their world from certain doom using a fully dynamic spell system. The adventure mode takes the players across three different levels, ranging from the lush forests of mountain valleys to the frozen halls of the Mountain King where wits and creative thinking are keys to victory. Paradox to publish fantasy action-RPG parody Magicka

As part of their big press event this week publisher Paradox Interactive announced that they have gotten the publishing rights to Magicka, a fantasy action-RPG from Sweden based developer Arrowhead Games Studios. The game will be released via digital download sometime later in 2010.

IGN has some details on the game which they say is aiming to parody a number of the typical Diablo-style gameplay conventions. For example, the game supports four player multiplayer but friendly fire will always be on. That means spells could hurt or even kill other players off which could generate a few giggles. With Diablo III's release well into the future this game could help ease the pain while also making us laugh.
