Review: Anomaly Warzone Earth

Anomaly Warzone Earth has been described as a reverse tower defense, and while this is marginally true, it misses something essential: rather than simply trudging endless waves of units towards a generic goal, you are actively dismantling the opposition. It's not so much reverse tower defense as tower attacking. It's also absolutely fantastic, and an extremely strong first showing from indie studio 11 Bit. Excellent production values, clean and concise game mechanics, and excellent replay value make it a steal at its asking price. It is probably the most highly polished $10 game you will ever play.

This is the playable PC demo for Anomaly: Warzone Earth, a reverse tower defense strategy game where players direct convoys through hostile territory to avoid hazards. Continue reading after the jump for system requirements.

"Anomaly: Warzone Earth is an extraordianry mixture of action and strategy in a reversed tower defence formula. The game tasks you with saving a near-future Earth from an alien onslaught. The invaders have captured world's major cities, building huge turrets that destroy everything in their path. It's up to you to lead an armor squad through the streets of cities like Baghdad and Tokyo, planning the route and strategically choosing which units to deploy in order to crush the opposition. Take control of the Commander, whose special abilities and quick thinking will be vital in supporting the squad in its mission, as you engage in fast-paced, tactical battle across story campaign and two heart-pounding Squad Assault Modes."

Anomaly Warzone Earth trailer fights off an alien invasion

It's always nice when a highly polished indie game hits the scene, and judging by its critical reception, that's exactly what Anomaly Warzone Earth is. This launch trailer for the newly released indie title shows both cinematic and in-game footage, and it certainly looks interesting to us. There's also the standard snippets of praise that almost all launch trailers require at some point. Thankfully, it does not include the numeric scoring, but rather small fragments of quotes that make us want to read the actual reviews.

This Week In PC Games: April 4-10

After a very busy March for major PC game releases, things slow down a bit for the first full week of April with several smaller downloadable PC games due to be released.

Dino D-Day: This game, which first started life as a Half-Life 2 mod, has one of the more colorful premises we have ever seen. The multiplayer shooter's back story has the Nazi's in WWII creating weapon-based dinosaurs which the Allies have to fight off. The game's developers at 800 North have already promised that this game will get lots of free content after its release on April 8.

Anomaly Warzone Earth, the alien invasion top down RTS game from developer 11 Bit Studios, now has a final release date for the PC and Mac versions. Fans of such games will be able to purchase and download this title on April 8 and will have a bargain price of $9.99 (the game is also coming for the iPhone and iPad).

The game will be sold via multiple outlets (Steam and GamersGate were mentioned) and there will also be pre-order incentives to buy the game ahead of time that will be revealed at a later date. You can find out more about Anomaly Warzone Earth in our recent interview about the game.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth trailer blows apart alien technology

What's the first thing to do in a crisis? Bring in the big guns. This Anomaly: Warzone Earth trailer does exactly that, and while the name is rather generic, this gameplay trailer makes the game itself look increasingly unique. It's an interesting twist on the tower defense formula, and not one we've really seen in action before now. This trailer spits out a lot of things we haven't seen before, though, and really gets us excited for the game. Trailers with tons of information do that to us, after all. Videos as slick as this one only compound the effect.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth trailer enters the danger zone

While Anomaly: Warzone Earth has a terrible name, it does not appear to be a terrible game. While not much of the cinematics have been revealed before now, this trailer shows the events leading up to the soon-released tower defense game. It doesn't show off any of the gameplay, including the game's core twist (you actually play the attackers rather than the defenders), but it will hopefully get people interested in finding out more about the game. After all, it's just the right combination of overly serious and goofy to fit perfectly in the realm of B-movies.

Interview: We chat with 11 Bit Studios' writer about Anomaly: Warzone Earth

As we enter into 2011 there are more and more upcoming games that are being developed as digital download exclusives by small game developers, some of which have come from larger game development studios. One of these companies is 11 Bit Studios, a Poland-based company made up of former team members of Metropolis Software and CD Projekt Red.

The company plans to release its first game sometime this March. It's a sci-fi RTS-tower defense title called Anomaly: Warzone Earth and its already generating some media buzz ahead of its planned release for the PC and Mac (along with the iPhone and iPad). Big Download got a chance to ask some questions to 11 Bit Studios' writer Pawel Miechowski to find out more about the company and about Anomaly Warzone Earth.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth announced

Last week we reported on the launch of 11bit Studios, a new game development group formed by former members of CD Projekt and the now defunct Metropolis Software. Now Rock Paper Shotgun has posted up the first screenshots and the first info for the developer's first game, Anomaly: Warzone Earth.

The game is being described as a scif-fi themed arcade-RTS title with players controlling "heavy armor military vehicles" in a top-down viewpoint. The goal is to battle and defeat an invading alien army in a futuristic urban setting. That's pretty much all we know about the game (no release date yet) but the article does have a few screenshots you can check out now.
