Sega's parent company brings in a profit

The news hasn't been good for Sega of late, at least from a financial percepective. The publisher has already admitted that sales of the long-in-development action-RPG Alpha Protocol, released about two months ago, were not good enough to justify a sequel. However Sega's parent company Sega Sammy Holdings has reported a profit for the last quarter that ended June 30.

Revenues went up a whopping 51 percent to 91.3 billion yen for the quarter while the company generated a profit of 7 billion yen. However most of those numbers game from the pachinko and pachislot division of Sega Sammy's business. Alpha Protocol's sales numbers came to just 700,000 copies worldwide (that likely includes the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions).

Sega West president: No Alpha Protocol sequel

Last month saw the long overdue release of Alpha Protocol, the super-spy themed RPG from developer Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Sega. The reviews for the game were mixed but apparently it was the game's sales that has cause Sega to officially nix any plans for a sequel to the game.

Computer and Video Games quotes Sega West president Mike Hayes as saying, "Let's speak very commercially; the game hasn't sold what we've expected, therefore we won't be doing a sequel," Obsidian is still saying busy; it has Fallout: New Vegas to finish up for its release in October and Dungeon Siege III is due in 2011. The developer is also working on the planned RPG game based on The Wheel of Time novels.

Alpha Protocol launch trailer has 60 seconds to choose a victim

The espionage role-playing game, Alpha Protocol, is available now for the PC and console systems. In it, players take on the role of an international spy on the trail of missing weapons, and must make decisions on how to get them.

"In Alpha Protocol the player is Michael Thornton, a rookie spy tasked with tracking down a group of fanatical terrorists behind a tragic missile attack on a passenger jetliner. Soon though, Thorton discovers there are much more devious forces at work, and before he realizes it, he is pulled into a dark and dangerous conspiracy orchestrated by ruthless, corrupt businessmen determined to control the fate of the world. He must use every tool and skill at his disposal to stop a cartel hell bent on shaping the world as they see fit.

Thornton has access to the latest in military weaponry and possesses tremendous raw physical and mental capacities, but it's completely up to the player to develop his abilities and determine how he interacts with every character in a vast, exotic real world locales. Alpha Protocol breaks new ground in gaming with the implementation of a decision-based mechanic where the player's every action and choice shapes the outcome of the game and its constantly evolving story.
