Capcom ends development of 'foreign' games

Clearly, the 73% plunge in profits last year has Capcom feeling a little timid. As a result, the company will stop commissioning games created by Western developers. Capcom President Haruhiro Tsujimoto is quoted by a newspaper as saying, "As a group, the new titles where development was led from abroad didn't do so well."

Capcom's current strategy will focus more on Japanese created games, but may still outsource sequels of existing franchises to Western developers. Last year's major games included Bionic Commando, developed by the now closed GRIN Studios, which sold 700,000 copies instead of the projected 1.5 million. Despite numerous delays to help separate it from the competition, Airtight's high flying shooter Dark Void sold 520,000 copies, falling far short of the 2 million copies Capcom was hoping for.

Dark Void soundtrack to be released February 9

Our own review of Dark Void, posted earlier this week, was somewhat mixed but everyone seem to agree that developer Airtight Games and publisher Capcom were lucky to get Bear McCreary to compose the third person game's music. This week it was announced the soundtrack album is set for release on February 9 vis Sumthing Else Music Works.

Best known for handling the music for the revived version of the Battlestar Galactica TV series, McCreary hand picked 80 minutes of music from the game to be put into the Dark Void soundtrack album. He also put in a bonus track, Theme from Dark Void (Mega Version). That 8-bit music track is being put into the upcoming downloadabe title Dark Void Zero.

Review: Dark Void

If you've ever been even a little jealous of The Rocketeer, and not just because he ends up with Jennifer Connelly's character at the end, then Dark Void is perfect for you. The game gives players the freedom to fly using a jetpack and switches back and-forth between high-flying dog-fighting combat, on-the ground shooting, and even some action on vertical surfaces like cliff walls. All the while, players get a chance to blast away aliens using advanced sci-fi weaponry and fly around in hijacked flying saucer.

This Week In PC Games: January 18-25

Just one game is due to be released for the PC this week but it's a big one. We are also waiting patiently for BioWare to finally release their promised Return to Ostergar DLC for Dragon Age: Origins. Hopefully that will happen this week, too.

Dark Void - Announced back in October 2007, Airtight Games's first title finally debuts thanks to publisher Capcom. This third person action game features the player traveling through the Bermuda Triangle to an alternate Earth to battle an alien invasion. Oh, and Nikola Tesla is involved. Be prepared for both ground-based combat as well as aerial action via a one-man jetpack.

"Dark Void is a sci-fi action-adventure game that combines an adrenaline-fueled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat. Set in a parallel universe called "The Void", players take on the role of Will, a pilot dropped into incredible circumstances within the mysterious Void. This unlikely hero soon finds himself swept into a desperate struggle for survival, joining forces with a rebel human group called The Survivors. Trapped in the Void, these resistance fighters are battling to hold off a mysterious alien race that plans to threaten Earth."

Dark Void dev diary goes behind the story

In Dark Void, players fly through the Bermuda Triangle and end up in a parallel dimension, ruled by an oppressive alien race, then strap on a jet pack to help the resistance. Flying free and fighting aliens is fun, but the development team at Airtight Games and Capcom offer their point of view and what the game means to them. Continue after the jump for another developer diary that details the kinds of weapons and equipment that will be at the player's disposal. Dark Void releases on January 19th.

Dark Void PC demo released after all but it's a FilePlanet exclusive

While we asked the head of Capcom's US PR operation if there would be a PC demo of Dark Void his response was, "Looks like it's console only." Apparently the PR folks were unaware that there were in fact plans for a PC demo of the upcoming third person action game and that furthermore it would be a FilePlanet exclusive.

Yep, it looks like the demo for the Airtight Games-developed title is only going to be available via IGN's download service. Oddly the release of the demo was not promoted ahead of time by Capcom on their blog site nor on the game's official web site. In fact they still haven't promoted the demo's release as of the posting of this article. In any case we are emailing Capcom to see if we can mirror a non-FilePlanet version of the demo.

CES 2010: Dark Void Zero to be released on PC soon

While the third person action game Dark Void will be released for the PC and other platforms on Jan. 19, publisher Capcom is also offering PC gamers a chance to play something related to the Airtight Games-created title. Previously announced as a downloadable Nintendo DSi game, our sister site Joystiq learned during CES 2010 that the platormer action title Dark Void Zero will also be released for the PC "soon".

The game itself, at least for its DSi version, is being designed to look and play like a "lost" 8-bit NES game. The game itself serves as a prequel to the main Dark Void title with the player controlling Rusty who also happens to have a jetpack to fight off the game's enemies the Witchers. A price point for Dark Void Zero for the PC has yet to be announced.

No Dark Void PC demo planned

Capcom's upcoming third person action game Dark Void is getting a demo before it's release on January 19. The publisher announced today that the demo for Airtight Games' third person action title will be released tomorrow for the Xbox 360 and Thursday for the PS3 and will let folks with those consoles check out both on-foot action as well as its signature jetpack action.

The full game is also coming to the PC but when Big Download emailed Capcom's PR reps to find out if the demo would be released for the PC as well the response was simply, "Looks like it's console only." And so yet another multiplayer game release puts the PC version on the second class citizen level.

Dark Void PC system requirements announced

We assume the game will also work on Windows 7 although its not mentioned here.
