Blood Stone trailer visits Istanbul, beats up local populace

James Bond is the longest running English-language movie series in history, and the games have been going on for a while now as well. Unfortunately, there have been no truly stellar James Bond games. Activision aims to correct this with another original James Bond adventure, titled Blood Stone. It looks like standard action-adventure fare, with plenty of body punches, explosions, and care chases, and this trailer emphasizes this point quite clearly. Set in Istanbul, it has the voiceover of M as James Bond punches the snot out of almost everyone. Nothing like some classic spy violence! Nothign special, but nothing incredibly terrible either.

Freeware Friday: Eternal Daughter

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Before Cave Story, there was a Metroidvania that really caught the eye of the indie community. It was a superbly polished gem of a game, and also incredibly hard. During development it was highly anticipated among a fair bit of gamers. Most fans of indie games, after playing it, realized that they had never played an indie game with that much polish. No game really approached its level until Cave Story a few years later. The game in question is Eternal Daughter, made by Jon Perry and Derek Yu (who is perhaps even more well known for the award-winning game Aquaria).

Freeware Friday: Iji

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Every so often there comes an indie game that completely blows away those who play it. The second Freeware Friday ever covered one of those games, the incomparable Cave Story. There's a new game out, though, that has joined the ranks of indie games that must be played by everyone. It's a platformer/shooter/puzzler with an interesting story, excellent mechanics, and tight controls. I'm talking about Iji, a game released only a few weeks ago that has already grabbed the attention of quite a few players.

E3 08: Mirror's Edge makes live gameplay video debut

If you're looking for something a little different, you'll find it in Mirror's Edge -- an action-adventure platformer played, unusually, in the first-person perspective. Its Joss Whedon-inspired story follows a woman named Faith who combines parkour and light martial arts to carry secret communiques across a towering urban landscape.

So far, two Mirror's Edge-related videos have emerged out of the E3 conference this week. One, featured above, is a trailer. It picks up exactly where the last trailer left off (now that's class!), and shows a wider array of locales. It also has some of the best music we've heard in a gameplay trailer.

The other video, which you'll find on the other side of the jump, is a developer walkthrough of part of an early level in the game. Yep -- actual live gameplay footage! That's a first for this title. Check it out!

Mirror's Edge becomes clearer thanks to new interview, screenshots

DICE's first-person action-adventure game Mirror's Edge is one of the wild cards of the 2008 lineup for all platforms (assuming it actually does come out in 2008). So far, we've had to rely on clues from a lone gameplay video and a recent story trailer. Now we have a bit more to work with; an interview and a few new screenshots. It's not much, but it's something, right?

In an interview at the EA3 (no, not E3!) press event, Mirror's Edge Senior Producer Owen O'Brien described the game design philosophy behind DICE's new game. The idea is that everything -- including combat -- is grounded in a free movement mechanic that is easy to learn but difficult to master. In fact, the combat controls consist of two buttons -- attack, and disarm. Exactly how those work depends on how you set up the action with movement beforehand.

Watch the interview for more, and be sure to check out the screenshots as well.

WALL-E demo unsurprisingly features robots

Pixar's newest film -- WALL-E -- is a bit like a cross between Short Circuit, I Am Legend, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; it tells the dryly humorous story of an adorable robot left alone on Earth, who is swept away by a visitor from the stars to see the wild universe.

Pixar teamed up with THQ to make a game based on WALL-E. It showed up on retail shelves yesterday, and now we have the demo here for your downloading pleasure. The file size of this action-adventure game is quite modest. It's only 219 MB, so you should be able to get rolling quite fast. Check it out.

Space Game: Mujakwi explores planetoids

In much the same way that Metroid is a game about exploring, Space Game: Mujakwi, an entry in the TIGSource Procedural Generation Competition, is about exploring as well. Unlike Metroid, the exploring is done on the insides of a procedurally generated planetoid. And like Metroid, Mujakwi (which means random) is amazing.

Inputting a name for the planet you wish to explore, you set off in your ship to explore and conquer it. Everything inside it, from the environment to the weapons to the enemies, is all procedurally generated based on the name you gave the planet. This gives the game a vast replayability and, along with its refined mechanics, addicting equipment gathering formula, and retro-styled graphics, makes the game an absolute blast to play. You can give it a whirl over on the TIGSource forums.
