New GoGamer.com sale slashes prices on PC games

We are not sure why GoGamer.com calls their sales periods "48 Hour Madness" since most of the time they last much longer than that. Anyhoo . . . The game retail web site now has some PC games at some rock-bottom prices for their latest sale including a number of recently released titles.

They include Wanted: Weapons of Fate for $24.90 and Velvet Assassin for $23.90 (50 percent off their current normal price). Other games on sale include Command and Conquer: The First Decade for $17.90, Unreal Tournament 3 for $9.90, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for $4.90 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for $7.90. The sales end on Wednesday at 3 am ET.

This week in PC Games: April 27-May 3

As we enter the month of May and get ever closer to E3, PC gamers can grab a WWII stealth game and a movie-based action game in stores and download a goofy RTS title and an RPG expansion.

Velvet Assassin: Replay Studios and Southpeak Games give us this long awaited stealth action title set in WWII. Playing Violet Sumner, the player tries to sabotage the evil Nazis' plans in a variety of missions. Killing Nazis is of course part of the game but there's also lots of sneaking around and using the shadows to cover your presence.

Velvet Assassin goes gold; new screenshots released

Get ready for some World War II spy action really soon. Publisher Southpeak Games has announced that Velvet Assassin has now gone gold and will ship to stores as planned next week (April 30 to be exact) for both the PC and Xbox 360 consoles.

Originally the game was being developed by Replay Studios to be published by Gamecock but came under the Southpeak Games umbrella when that company bought Gamecock's assets last fall. Players will be able to control British spy Violette Summer (based on the real WWII secret agent Violette Szabo) as she sneaks around those nasty Nazis and tries to bring their plans down. Southpeak sent over new screenshots from the game (six in all) that we have added to our gallery.

Southpeak offers up $5 rebate on X-Blades

Mail in rebates are not normally done for games but publisher Southpeak is making an exception for their recent action-fighting game X-Blades. The company announced today that they are offering a $5 mail in rebate for people who purchase either the PC or Xbox 360 version of the game.

The rebate offer ends on Feb. 10, 2010 so there's plenty of time to take advantage of the offer (especially if the game's retail price goes down in the next several months as it likely will). Southpeak is also offering an additional $5 rebate if you purchase the upcoming Velvet Assassin or Section 8 titles. Because we all like saving money.

Velvet Assassin music video rocks out

This music video, set to the song "Young" by Hollywood Undead, uses scenes from the stealth game, Velvet Assassin. In Velvet Assassin players take the role of Violette Summer, a World War II spy and assassin. The game is expected to release in May.

Feature: Big Download's 10 most anticipated spring quarter 2009 games

Ah, spring. It's the season for renewal where trees grow back their leaves, grass pops back up out of the ground and there's a general sense of optimism in the air (except for Cubs fans, but that's a completely different story). Oddly enough in past years the PC game industry has used the spring quarter (April-June) to take something of a break. In 2008 only one major PC game, Age of Conan, was released during the spring quarter.

That's not the case for the 2009 spring season, however. There are quite a few major titles coming out for our platform in the next three months. So much so, in fact, that we were actually able to pick 10 games that we are most looking forward to playing. And believe it or not it was a hard list to decide on; we left out quite a few games that also look promising but in our view didn't look quite as good as the 10 games on this list. As always keep in mind that release dates for games can, and ususally do, change so it's very possible that one or more of these titles may not make their spring release dates.

Velvet Assassin Trailer rips apart the competition

Video games often portray assassination as a male-dominated business. This trailer for Velvet Assassin shows that women can take skillfully eliminate targets too... with the same stealth or brutality. Of course, men probably wouldn't look as good stabbing in nightgown either. Velvet Assassin is expected to release in April.

Southpeak Games has profitable holiday quarter

While other game publishers (*cough* Midway *cough* THQ *cough* EA) are in various states of financial decline at the moment, smaller game publisher Southpeak Games actually had a solid quarter of revenues and profits, at least according to their latest financial results.

The company revealed that its last financial quarter, which ended Dec. 31, 2008, had revenues of $17.3 million for the time period, over four times the amount it got for the same time period a year ago ($4.2 million). Southpeak pulled in a profit of $1.2 million for the last quarter. Last fall the company bought out Gamecock's game line-up, including Legendary. and this year the company has plans to publish a number of PC game titles including Section 8, Velvet Assassin and the upcoming fantasy RPG sequel Two Worlds: The Temptation.

Joystiq's game coverage of New York Comic Con 2009

This past weekend the massive New York Comic Con was held and the pop culture event in Manhattan served as a place for the game industry to show off and talk about a number of upcoming titles. Our sister site Joystiq was all over the convention floor and at the panels to cover the event.

New York Comic Con is run by Reed Exhibitions and has been highly successful in its few years of existence (the first convention was held in 2006). Early estimates have pegged the 2009 show as having over 77,000 attendees. The show will be moving to an October date for its 2010 edition. However, Red Exhibitions is running the upcoming Penny Arcade Expo East event that will debut in late March 2010 in Boston. We suspect the game industry will be out in force at that inaugural show. In the meantime check out Joystiq's coverage of NY Comic Con which includes coverage of a panel with Bethesda Softworks' Todd Howard and 2K Boston's Ken Levine, some Battlefield 1943 impressions, and some impressions of Velvet Assassin.
