Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - November 15

Tomorrow Need For Speed Hot Pursuit is released. Thanks to the pre-release reviews praising this game we can't wait to get our hands on the PC port. Running down and crashing racers in million dollar police sports cars is pretty much the perfect game for us.

More Steam sales; Lead and Gold, Shattered Horizon and Supreme Commander 2

As promised earlier this week two inide game games are having a free play weekend on Steam. Fatshark's third person Western shooter Lead and Gold and Futuremark's sci-fi zero-g shooter Shattered Horizon are now currently available to play for free until 4 pm Eastern time on Sunday. Both games are on sale until Monday at 1 pm with Shattered Horizon just $9.99, Lead and Gold priced at $7.49 or get both in the Frontiers Pack for just $12.49.

Also on sale until Monday on Steam is Gas Powered Games' sci-fi RTS game Supreme Commander 2. You can get the game for a mere $5.10 at the moment. The recently released DLC pack for the game also has a big price cut this weekend to just $3.40.

Steam updates a number of games with bug fixes

It's been a little while since we have posted up news of automatic patches of games via Steam so consider this a catch-up as a number of PC game titles that offered up patches via Valve's download service. One of the biggest is for Supreme Commander 2. Gas Powered Games' latest RTS game updated earlier this week with a big change to its economy. Before the patch you patch for units and structures when they were ordered. This new update makes you spend for units when they actually start construction. There are also a number of other changes and bug fixes in the patch.

Other PC games that have gotten bug updates via Steam include R.U.S.E., Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike Source, a truly massive patch for Victoria 2, Garry's Mod, X3 Terran Conflict, Left 4 Dead 2, Nation Red, DogFighter, and Sol Survivor.

Supreme Commander 2 dev diary discusses new strategies

Supreme Commander 2's DLC has been released this week, and to commemorate the release, the folks at Gas Powered Games have released another developer diary. This one in particular covers the additions and changes to Supreme Commander 2's units through the DLC. In doing so, both programmers and testers detail their favorite strategies, most used new units, and some flybys of the new maps. There's also a cameo by Chris Taylor at the end, although it is in voice only. If you want a good low-down of the new tactics and units available, this diary will give you a better look than any brief trailer.

Supreme Commander 2 Infinite War Battle Pack DLC released on Steam

As promised, developer Gas Powered Games and publisher Square Enix have released a DLC mini-expansion pack for its recent sci-fi RTS game Supreme Commander 2. The Infinite War Battle Pack DLC is available to download now via Steam for $9.99.

While there's no new single player additions, the DLC contains 10 new multiplayer maps (eight maps plus two more that are double the size of the regular maps). There are also a number of additional units for the game's three factions. Each faction also gets some additional upgrades and boosts. You can check out the extensive list of all the new additions in the DLC after the jump:

Big Download's News Bits & Bytes - September 22

With the exception of the GoG.com news it's been a pretty slow day. Maybe everyone is still too busy playing Civilization V.

Supreme Commander 2 trailer improves computer's brains

All this talk of neural nets and AI learning has us a little bit concerned. Is Gas Powered Games trying to bring about the robot apocalypse? Are they build Skynet within Supreme Commander 2? The content director and QA testers in the trailer above would have you believe they are human, but we have the sneaking suspicion that they are actually robots. Ones designed to keep us from finding out that their AI has conquered the world.

Kidding aside, Gas Powered Games has been hard at work improving the AI of Supreme Commander 2. They've been implementing more neural nets for unit behaviors (naval units are specifically mentioned), tweaking established settings, and given the reins of AI customization to players. All of this is good for those looking for a challenge, but if the robots take over, don't say we didn't warn you.
