Could Super Street Fighter IV finally show up on PC?

The 2009 PC release of Capcom's fighting game Street Fighter IV was a bit critical hit and proved that the fighting genre could work on the PC platform. So why didn't we get to see the follow up, Super Street Fighter IV, for the PC as well? Last year we were told that the high degree of PC game piracy was to blame.

In a new "Ask Capcom" video chat, Capcom VP Christian Svensson states that as a die-hard PC gamer himself (indeed he's on the board of the PC Gaming Alliance) he's been pushing to get Capcom to change its mind on the matter. He stated. "Unfortunately, we can't do that yet, but I'm still cautiously optimistic."

Report: Piracy to blame for no Super Street Fighter IV for PC

PC gamers were extremely happy that Capcom decided to port Street Fighter IV to the PC in 2009. So naturally some folks thought that Capcom would do the same for Super Street Fighter IV which adds 10 new characters to the 25 that come from the original. However, if a Japanese web site is to be believed, a PC port is not coming anytime soon.

In a chat with 4gamer.net (and translated by Gamasutra) the game's producer producer Yoshinori Ono stated that while a port of the game would be easy Capcom doesn't want to release the game on the PC due to the high degree of piracy. He also indicated that Capcom could change its mind if it could find a DRM solution for the title. What about using Steam? Oddly, Ono said that's not an option either since Capcom feels it would be unfair for people who can't purchase games via Steam. Ummmm ... Capcom does know that Steam is pretty much the biggest PC game download service there is, right?

Capcom offering big weekend sale on PC downloadable games

While Steam is offering sales of Capcom's PC titles during its summer sale, Capcom itself has put several of its PC downloadable game titles on the price chopping block itself on their own online store. In most cases the savings are actually more than the ones that Steam is currently offering.

For this weekend only you can get Street Fighter IV, Dark Void and Neopets Puzzle Adventure for just $14.99 each, which is at least a 50 percent savings from their normal prices. You can also get MotoGP 08 for $9.99 and Dark Void Zero, Flock and Age of Booty are on sale for $4.99 each.

Could Super Street Fighter IV make its way to the PC?

Capcom surprised many when it announced that it would release a PC version of Street Fighter IV. While the PC port of the excellent fighting game sequel was released several months after the console versions, it still got great reviews from critics. However, Capcom has so far not announced plans for a PC port of Super Street Fighter IV, an expansion of the game with a number of new fighters.

However, Capcom has just announced plans for an arcade release of the game in Japan. Why should PC gamers care? Because, as Shacknews points out, Capcom's arcade machines are based on a Windows XP system which would make a PC port of the game pretty simple to develop. So far Capcom has not announced any PC plans for the game. Meanwhile the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are due out in late April.

Direct2Drive holds end-of-year sale

With its 24 Days of Christmas promotion now over, Direct2Drive has moved on to its last PC game sale of the year, putting a large fraction of its titles on sale until midnight Pacific time on January 1. If you missed out on their one day sales they have basically given you a second chance to grab these games at super low prices.

Among the games on sale are Torchlight at $9.95, Section 8 at $12.50, Champions Online at $14.95, Street Fighter IV at $19.95, Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor at $7.50, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II at $19.95.

Steam and Direct2Drive offer up more PC game sales

Wednesday is '"Hump Day" but if you have been waiting to see if certain games from Direct2Drive and Steam will go on sale, Wednesday could also be "Oh My Gosh I Saved Lots OF Money Day." Or not:
  • Direct2Drive's latest one day sale in its 24 Days of Christmas promotion is for Capcom's excellent PC port of Street Fighter IV. You can download and purchase the game for just $19.95 from now until 1 pm Eastern Time on Thursday.
  • Steam has added four sprite add-ons for Paradox Interactive's WWII strategy game Hearts of Iron III. If you purchase one of the four (they are $1.99 each) you can buy the main game for 60 percent off until December 12.

Capcom reveals latest financials; Street Fighter IV PC 50 percent off

It's "earnings season" which means the vast majority of publically traded companies reveal how they did financially in the last quarter. In Capcom's case, the situation is excellent as the Japanese publisher announced a whopping 58.4 percent increase in its profits in the first half of its fiscal year. Higher-than-expected sales of its games were the main reason although much of that sales increase came from its home country. Sales in the US were not as strong due to the lower-than-expected sales of Bionic Commando and the delay of Dark Void from a fall 2009 to a January 2010 game.

In related news, Capcom is selling the downloadable PC version of their hit fighting game Street Fighter IV for just $19.95 in their online store. That's 50 percent off its normal price. The sale price last through Thursday.
