Could next Mortal Kombat come to the PC?

PC gamers have experiences a small uptick in fighting game releases recently. 2009's release of Capcom's Street Fighter IV proved to be popular with critics. This past week Europe got a PC port of the 2D fighting game BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger that hopefully will be released in the US in the near future. Now there are rumblings that the next game in the Mortal Kombat series could find its way to PC hard drives.

Kotaku reports that when Mortal Kombat's co-creator Ed Boon was asked if the 2011 release of the game could come to the PC he answered, "We're definitely considering it." He added, " Apparently there seems to be a market for that in Europe. Since we're on the Unreal Engine, I guess it's not that much of a change from the console versions." The series made its last appearance on the PC with the release of Mortal Kombat IV by publisher Midway way back in 1998. In 2009 Midway was shut down and the franchise and the game's development studio was bought by Warner Bros. Interactive.

Feature: Hands-on with Unreal Tournament III's upcoming Titan Pack

By John Gaudiosi

CARY, North Carolina – Epic Games isn't letting something like the bankruptcy filing of publisher Midway Games get in the way of keeping Unreal Tournament III gamers happy. Come March 5, Epic is unleashing the largest free bonus content to its bestselling game franchise for both PC and PlayStation 3 in the form of an 800MB patch. Due to Microsoft Xbox Live download limitations, this vast array of new gameplay maps, game modes and assorted goodies won't be available to Xbox 360 UT3 gamers now, or likely ever.

The Titan Pack bonus content introduces 11 new multiplayer maps for Deathmatch, CTF, Vehicle CTF and Warfare modes, plus eight popular maps from the first UT3 bonus pack and Xbox 360 version (you can check out details on all the new maps in our feature article - ed). In addition, players will experience two new game modes: Greed mode, a "tug of war" style kill points battle, and Betrayal mode, a cutthroat style of play where alliances and teams can shift fluidly throughout a match. The Titan Pack also rewards gamers for performing tasks like collecting all the power-ups in a level. There are 57 awards that can be attained as Steam Achievements for PC and Trophies for PS3.

Midway files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

In a move that was highly expected, financially troubled publisher Midway has announced that it has decided to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company has been under massive economic pressure for some time and today's move was called the "....next logical step in an ongoing process to address our capital structure."

Midway will continue to run its operations as usual through the Chapter 11 process. The company did not announce any layoffs today and it's not known how this new move will affect their two announced upcoming games, the action driving game Wheelman and the open world action game This is Vegas.

Midway debuts digital arcade, store

All the cool kids are doing it, man. Don't you want to launch a digital distribution store, too? Midway announced that they've finally succumbed to peer pressure with the debut of MidwayArcade.com, a digital storefront featuring classic Midway arcade titles such as Spy Hunter, Joust, and Defender. Many titles such as Gauntlet II, Primal Rage, and Total Carnage are available in packs, such as one that includes the aforementioned three titles for a total of $5.

Also available is a digital store for newer Midway titles, which is accessible via Midway.com. Available games include Unreal Tournament III ($19.95), John Woo Presents Stranglehold ($19.95), The Suffering ($9.99), The Suffering 2 ($14.95), and Midway Arcade Treasures Deluxe ($19.99), a collection of classic arcade games from Midway Arcade Treasures 2 and Midway Arcade Treasures 3.

More adept at ripping heads attached to spines than building digital shops, both MidwayArcade and the Midway.com store were built by Digital River, Inc., a leader provider of e-commerce services. "We are excited to work with Midway Games and help maximize the sales opportunities on its online stores," said Joel Ronning, Digital River's CEO. "Using our e-commerce expertise, we can help Midway offer a consistent, reliable and user-friendly way for its consumers to purchase their favorite Midway games."

"The Midway brand has a long and rich history of fast-paced and addictive games from our arcade and touchscreen heritage," said Mona Hamilton, vice president, marketing, Midway Home Entertainment. "The new digital storefront at midway.com and the casual games site at midwayarcade.com allow us to deliver these classics, favorites and recent releases directly to a wide-range of Midway fans."
