During the Infinite Crisis even in DC continuity, the supervillain Chemo was dropped on the city of Blüdhaven, Nightwing's home city. It has been a while since the devastation, and the city is filled with toxic waste and mutated creatures everywhere. The latest trailer for DC Universe Online explores the efforts of the DC universe to clean up Blüdhaven, and it gives a good look into the mechanics of alert zones. It's also interesting to note that both heroes and villains want to clean up the city. Are the villains out to rebuild so that they can re-establish a base of power within the city? Who knows!

Rift is nearing release, and if you doubted that it is almost here, we've got a little something to change your mind: TV spots! These two advertisements show essentially the same footage, but with a different ending for each. The first, above, is 30 seconds long and has an ending of a creature coming through a rift. The second is 15 seconds long and ends with a tentacle swinging down upon the party. They also take on World of Warcraft directly by mentioning Azeroth in a rather Wizard of Oz fashion.

MapleStory is one of the most popular MMOs, free-to-play or otherwise, to hit the market. It is easily Nexon's biggest hit, even if the cartoony art style and slow gameplay are off-putting to some. This newest trailer for the latest free exapnsion is interesting in that it basically promises a reinvention, but shows no changes whatsoever. It doesn't even show any gameplay footage! Just mentions of darkness, dark wizards (always funny), and art of the Maple World and its inhabitants. Perhaps Nexon realized it's a little hard to portray Maple Story as darker than it actually is via in-game screenshots. After all, it's difficult to be nitty gritty when players are hopping around and slaughtering adorable animals.

Final Fantasy XI was not that long ago, relatively, but Square Enix is giving the MMORPG genre a second shot. Final Fantasy XIV is that new attempt, and everything about the game looks fairly interesting. However, this trailer is not. While Final Fantasy at this point is a gaming institution, we can only take so many generic trailers composed of orchestral music, cryptic phrases, and nonsensical CGI before it starts to get a little old. However, we do like the shots of gameplay seen at a few points, as in-action shots are always much cooler than stills.

The Warcraft III map Defense of the Ancients (or DotA) is becoming much more of a separate genre of its own, thanks to the many imitators. One of the first was the game Demigod, created by the folks behind the Total Annihilation and Dungeon Siege games. Now there are a few more, such as Heroes of Newerth. One of the best of these knock-offs, and a game that rivals its inspiration in scope and excellence of execution, is League of Legends. It launched recently with a big celebration, and while it still has some issues that need ironing out, it's easily a retail-class game that any strategy or role-playing fan should give a try.

Each week we find more and more free games that do not quite fit into the freeware mold. Games that do not require a subscription fee to play, but encourage player usage of money through microtransactions or special subscription services. This is Playing For Free, a column that showcases these games.

It's interesting to note that sometimes the knock-off can exceed the original, or change things up in ways that make the knock-off more compelling than the original. Runes of Magic did this with World Of Warcraft through a bunch of intriguing changes to the gameplay, but it's not just restricted to knock-offs of mainstream commercial games. La Tale is very similar to Nexon's incredibly popular and enduring Maple Story, but it iadds many great changes to the simple side-scrolling formula. Sure, it has an uncanny resemblance to its inspiration, but it manages to be a great game on its own and hold up to Maple Story when compared side-by-side.

There are not a lot of brawler games available on the PC, and for good reason. Most people prefer control pads while kicking the snot out of random henchman. However, there are a few, and in the case of Dungeon Fighter Online, they are sometimes even MMOs. An excellent side-scrolling brawler packaged into a rather average MMO, it's Nexon's newest release, and easily our favorite. How can Combat Arms or Maple Story compete with classic gameplay, after all?
