Krome Studios admits to recent layoffs; won't give exact numbers

Recently one of the biggest Australian-based game developers, Transmission Games, shut its doors completely even after releasing two major game titles in 2009. Now comes word that another dev studio from Down Under is facing layoffs as well. IndustryGamers reports that Krome Studios has admitted to "an undisclosed number of employees" being given their walking papers.

Krome Studios also just had a major game released for publisher LucasArts, Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes. However that wasn't enough for the company to avoid a restructuring that caused Krome to lay off some workers. All is not lost, though. Krome's CEO Robert Walsh.states the team is "actively pursuing several business opportunities which, if secured, will enable Krome to reemploy some of the staff given notice."

Is Tales of Monkey Island's final episode going to make you cry?

Telltale Games' first "season" in its episodic adventure game Tales of Monkey Island is getting ready for its fifth and final chapter, Rise of the Pirate God. Today, Telltale announced the final chapter will be released for PC via download on December 8 and they hint that the game's lead character could meet with a nasty fate.

Yes, Guybrush Threepwood could be no more in this concluding chapter and even Telltale's Dave Grossman seems to think there's no hope for our pirate hero. In Telltale's press release announcing Rise of the Pirate God, he says, "It's a great tragedy to see such a productive life seemingly cut off prematurely. And I'm not just saying that because he owes me money." We won't have long to find out if he's correct. In the meantime the first four individual chapters in the series are now on sale at Telltale's web site.

LEGO Indiana Jones 2 trailer opens the Ark and finds disco

Those that were amused by the earlier LEGO Indiana Jones 2 video, where the Nepal Bar scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark was redone with a LEGO treatment and shown alongside the movie footage, might also enjoy this new one. It's only fitting that it parodies one of the final scenes, and probably one of the most memorable ones, from Raiders... although, people looking forward to seeing some plastic face melting might be disappointed. LEGO Indiana Jones 2 releases tomorrow.

Star Wars: The Old Republic web comic to be collected in paperback

Several months ago, BioWare and LucasArts teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to present a continuing online comic book series based on the upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. A few pages of the comic at a time have been released on the game's official web site ever since.

But sometimes you want to read a comic where a PC, even a laptop, should not go. So Dark Horse plans to collect the first 27 online "issues" of the series into one 96 page softcover collection. The series, written by Rob Chestney and drawn by Alex Sanchez, serves as a prequel to the events in the MMO and will be released to comic book stores on April 28.

New Star Wars: The Old Republic player class revealed

While the game's official web site has not posted this news year, Eurogamer is reporting that BioWare has revealed the latest player class for their long awaited MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. During a press event for the game, it was revealed that the Imperial Agent will be one of the eight player classed in the game.

The Imperial Agent, who obviously is with the Empire faction, sounds like the game's version of a super-spy as they have access to lots of high technology and do their work behind the scenes. The Imperial Agent joins the previously revealed classes of Jedi Knights, Smugglers and Troopers on the Republic side and the Sith Warriors and Bounty Hunters working for the Empire. Two more classes are unrevealed.

Jedi Knights revealed as latest class in Star Wars: The Old Republic

Well here's a shocker. Star Wars: The Old Republic, the upcoming MMO from BioWare, EA and LucasArts will have . . . Jedi Knights as a playable class. We have to admit that we didn't see that development coming a mile away. Ok, we did. In fact we think there would be an uproar if Jedi Knights were not in the game that would make the current Modern Warfare 2 debates look pale by comparison.

In any case the game's official web site now has the Jedi Knight listed as a playable class in the upcoming MMO and we suspect there will be lots of battles between that class and the previously announced Sith Warrior faction. There's still no release date for the game but many expect it might launch in late 2010.

Fourth Tales of Monkey Island chapter due on Friday

Last week we reported that Telltale Games was planning to release the fourth chapter in their LucasArts published adventure game Tales of Monkey Island this week. Now Telltale has narrowed that release date down, saying the fourth installment in the series will be released on Friday.

Telltale has also served up some advanced screenshots from the fourth chapter, titled The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood. In this Law and Order-ish episode our favorite ship captain has to defend himself in court against false charges and an "smooth-talking prosecutor". With just one more chapter left in the series, can Guybrush escape the long arm of the law? We have our money on him but we could be wrong . . .
