What might have been: Frictional Games releases Unbirth

It's rare that we get to see how a game evolves from its beginnings to its final project. Developer Frictional Games is doing just that with its release of an alpha version of Unbirth, a horror themed first person action-adventure game that served as the first step in releasing the first game in their acclaimed Penumbra series. The game, which was created by Frictional Games founder Thomas Grip a number of years ago, was never finished but because of popular demand by fans, he decided to release a playable (but still unstable) alpha version of Unbirth which should give Penumbra fans an interesting insight into the series. The web site also has some more info on the history of the game's development along with monster sketches, level screenshots and design docs and more. Penumbra digital download expansion annouced

Frictional Games have released two games in their acclaimed Penumbra series of first person horror action-adventure games so far. Both Penumbra: Overture and Penumbra: Black Plague were released in retail stores as well as digital download versions. You can even purchase a special version of Penumbra: Overture that is designed to work with the Novint Falcon controller to "feel" the objects you interact with in the game world.Today the game's publisher Paradox Interactive announced that it will offer a new Penumbra expansion that will be made available exclusively via digital download from Paradox's Gamersgate web site. The new expansion will be titled Requiem and according to Paradox's press release it is being designed to tie up loose ends that were a part of the first two titles.Can you trust your senses and figure out what's real and what's not? That is apparently the theme of Requiem so be prepared to be scared out of your...well, whatever it is you need to be scared out of. Pricing and a release date for Penumbra: Requiem have yet to be revealed....
