New Medal of Honor game to be released October 12

It's going to be a very busy and very crowded fall time period for the game industry in 2010. Today Electronic Arts announced that the relaunching of their Medal of Honor first person shooter series will be released on October 12 in the US. Europeans will get the game a few days later on October 15.

As we have reported before, EA's Los Angeles studio is developing the single player campaign which takes the series out of WW II for the first time and placed it in modern day Afghanistan. The multiplayer portion of the title is being made by Battlefield developers Digital Illusions.

GDC 2010: Supergiant Games formed by Ex-EALA members

We've seen a number of game developers leave huge publishers and development teams to strike it out on their own. The latest such group to do so is Supergiant Games, formed by three former members of Electronic Arts' Los Angeles studio. The trio's previous credits include working on the Command and Conquer RTS series.

The company is making its full debut at this week's Game Developers Conference and will be showing off a demo of their first title. There's no word on what that game will be like. Indeed the only info on the game on the company's web site states that it will be released in 2011 for downloadable platforms. We will keep an eye out on this studio if for no other reason than we think their name is really cool.

Next Medal of Honor game now due in third quarter 2010

It looks like Electronic Arts is going back to war a bit faster than anticipated. During their financial press release today, the publisher announced that their next Medal of Honor game is now currently scheduled to be released in their second 2011 fiscal quarter, which means a third quarter 2010 calendar release (between July and September).

The game's earlier release is perhaps a way for EA to get the game out before Activision releases their next Call of Duty game which, while not officially announced is expected to be released in the fall quarter of 2010. As we have reported before, the new Medal of Honor game is set in modern day Afghanistan and will feature a single player campaign made by EA's Los Angeles studios and multiplayer modes made by Digital Illusions.

New Medal of Honor game to mix Unreal Engine 3 with DICE's Frostbite Engine

Last fall, Electronic Arts annouced that they were reviving their Medal of Honor shooter series by having their Los Angeles studio handle the single player campaign while the Battlefield team at Digital Illusions will build the game's multiplayer mode. Now word has come out that in addition to two separate dev teams, the new Medal of Honor game will have two separate game engines.

The game's official Twitter web site has posted up word that the single player campaign will be built by EALA using Epic's Unreal Engine 3 (indeed the recent trailer for the game is all Unreal Engine 3 footage). However the multiplayer team at DICE decided to use their own in-house Frostbite Engine (the same one being used for Battlefield Bad Company 2) for their portion of the game. It should be interesting to see how the game's development is handled with this rather unique approach.
