Dark Void dev diary makes sure its characters live up to the Capcom standard

Capcom games are generally known for having stylized and memorable characters. Naturally, the development team working on Dark Void wants to live up to that expectation by having fully fleshed out characters for players to enjoy and interact with, and in doing so will overcome the stereotype that American video game characters are two-dimensional. We'll soon find out how successful they are when Dark Void releases in 2010.

Capcom reveals latest financials; Street Fighter IV PC 50 percent off

It's "earnings season" which means the vast majority of publically traded companies reveal how they did financially in the last quarter. In Capcom's case, the situation is excellent as the Japanese publisher announced a whopping 58.4 percent increase in its profits in the first half of its fiscal year. Higher-than-expected sales of its games were the main reason although much of that sales increase came from its home country. Sales in the US were not as strong due to the lower-than-expected sales of Bionic Commando and the delay of Dark Void from a fall 2009 to a January 2010 game.

In related news, Capcom is selling the downloadable PC version of their hit fighting game Street Fighter IV for just $19.95 in their online store. That's 50 percent off its normal price. The sale price last through Thursday.

Last minute Internet game sales show up

We thought that we had gone over all of the weekend's Internet PC game sales but as usual a few more have popped up since then. So consider this new post a late heads-up.

Capcom to offer Tesla Roadster in Dark Void-themed giveaway

Remember that mysterious event that was supposed to happen yesterday in San Fransisco to promote Dark Void? Well it happened and that event turned out to be the introduction to a new contest to promote the upcoming action game from developer Airtight Games and publisher Capcom. The folks were taken to a nearby car dealership. But not just any car dealership. Its one where they sell the all-electric Tesla Roadster car.

And the contest? Capcom is giving away one of these puppies, valued at over $100,000, to anyone who enters their sweepstakes. Five first prizes get a chance to test drive the Roadster in Las Vegas during CES in January. The "link" between the car and the game is that Dark Void has famed "mad scientist" Nikola Tesla as a character in the game that your player character encounters. Capcom sent over some new screenshots from the game, some of which show Tesla. They also have a pretty funny commercial for the Tesla Roadster giveaway that you can see after the jump.

Capcom to hold "secret" Dark Void event on Monday in San Fransisco

So when is a secret event not so much of a secret anymore? When the company holding the event posts about it on its blog site. In any case, Capcom has done just that for a not-so-much-secret-anymore event to promote their first game of 2010, Dark Void.

The Capcom Unity site is inviting anyone to register for the event who is 21 year of age and over and will be able to make their afternoon and early evening free in San Fransisco. Now they are keeping exactly what's on the agenda to themselves for now, saying only that those who get selected will have to show up at a location on Monday at 2 pm. Then the invited will be picked up and driven to the final secret location for the event.

What will it be? Will folks get to fly a real jetpack like the one in the Airtight Games-developed Dark Void? Will there be wine, women and singing involved? If you get picked and are allowed to talk about the event after its held, let us know.

Dead Rising 2 trailers find inventive ways to deal with the zombie menace

There will be no shortage of neat and creative ways to dispose of flesh eating zombies in Dead Rising 2. In multiplayer, the public has learned to make the most out of the apocalypse by turning zombie fighting into a reality TV sports game show called TIR (Terror is Reality). How effective is goring a zombie using makeshift horns? See for yourself. Continue reading after the jump to see more gameplay videos, including using a wheelchair as a weapon and beating zombies down with a roulette stick. Dead Rising 2 is expected to release in the spring of 2010.

Dead Rising 2 reveals game show-like multiplayer modes

Capcom decided to pull a planned demo of Dead Rising 2 from its E3 presentations last June (the H1N1 virus kept the game's key Japanese producer from attending) but at the Tokyo Game Show this week the zombie action sequel was back in full force as Capcom showed off the game's planned multiplayer modes.

Our sister site Joystiq got a chance to check out the action in a hands-on demo. As it turns out Dead Rising 2's multiplayer modes are in the context of a TV game show called Terror is Reality. You can see one of the mode's mini-games in the screenshot above as players use helmet with antlers (yes, helmets with antlers) to throw zombies in the air. It's all very "Smash TV" stuff and certainly sounds in line with the goofy style of the Dead Rising franchise. Too bad we still don't have a release date.

Review: Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 (Res5) is the latest installment in the long-running survival horror franchise and was recently ported to the PC. The game features faster paced action compared to its predecessors, but what really sets it apart is the fact this game is built from the ground up to support cooperative multiplayer. Other big changes include an increased emphasis on action thanks largely to the fast-moving infected (called Majini), which greatly speeds up the pace of the game but sacrifices a bit of the "survival" aspect from the genre. Although the game initially looks like an action shooter, there are a number of features that clearly distinguishes it as Resident Evil game. These include grotesque monsters, solving puzzles and conserving ammunition whenever possible. The PC version offers upgraded graphics in comparison to its console counterpart, along with streamlined controls and a few other extra features. Although the console version has been out for quite some time now, the PC port offers an excellent game experience that easily competes with other PC action games.

Lost Planet movie won't be loyal to game's plot

Several months ago it was announced that Warner Bros. was working on an adaptation of Lost Planet, Capcom's third person action game that was released for the PC not once but twice (with the original game and Lost Planet Colonies that contained new material. People wondering if we will see the same plot from the game translated to the screen, however, could be in for a dissapointment.

G4TV reports that Capcom's Jun Takeuchi, the producer of the upcoming (and so far Xbox 360 and PS3 only) sequel Lost Planet 2) stated that the movie version "is completely different from the game" in terms of its storyline although both movie and game share the same world.
