Cover of first Elder Scrolls prose novel revealed

Last spring, Betheda Softworks announced a deal with book publisher Del Rey to publish two novels set in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls fantasy universe. The first of those novels, The Infernal City, is due out on November 24 and Bethesda has now revealed the cover artwork to the book.

As we reported last April, the book is written by noted fantasy author Greg Keyes and is set after the events of Bethesda's last game in the RPG series, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. And yes the novel does indeed involve a floating city as the cover suggests. A second Elder Scrolls-based novel is scheduled for release sometime in 2010.

This cool Fallout 3 gun replica is, well, cool

Remember a while back when a game prop-replica maker named Harrison Krix created a cool-as-school replica of the Portal gun? Well, he's been keeping extremely busy since then with a number of different game-related projects. His latest effort is a commission for a AER9 Laser Rifle as seen in Fallout 3.

Krix goes into extreme detail on his web site on how he build the gun replica for a fan who wanted to use it for a Fallout 3 Vault Dweller cosplay costume. As you can see above the final result is pretty spectacular and we are sure that the person who hired Krix to make the gun got more than his money's worth.

Review: Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta

Fallout 3 players complete a ton of fantastic achievements after stepping from Vault 101, the least of which includes saving (or dooming) humanity and working to revive (or conquer) the irradiated Capitol Wastelands. So, why limit those accomplishments to Earth? The newest downloadable content expansion, Mothership Zeta, takes former Vault dwellers toward the final frontier as they're abducted and beamed aboard a giant flying saucer high up in Earth's orbit. Players have a chance to fight a ship full of aliens using their advanced technology in an effort to figure out what they're up to and find a way to escape.

Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta trailer abducts players

Fallout 3: Mothership Zeta, the newest DLC expansion is August 3rd. In it, players are abducted by aliens and brought aboard the mothership. Players will have to uncover the aliens' secret plans and escape... preferably with armfuls of alien technology.

"A strange Alien signal is being broadcast throughout the Capital Wasteland, originating from a crashed UFO. Is it a distress call, or something far more sinister? That question is answered when you find yourself beamed aboard an enormous Alien spacecraft, with only one alternative – to fight your way to the bridge of the ship and secure your escape."

Freeware Friday: Daggerfall

Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Bethesda has come a long way from their initial PC offerings. Now they are known for their large, yet surprisingly dense and layered games like Oblivion or Fallout 3. However, way back before the release of Morrowind, they were better known for a truly massive, semi-random RPG that puts the size of their later outing to shame. I'm talking about Daggerfall, which was released only a few weeks ago as freeware for the fifteen year anniversary of the Elder Scrolls series. While it has not aged completely gracefully, it's hard to go wrong with a good helping of classic RPG action at no cost.

Bethesda Softworks is celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls series. In doing so, the company has released full versions of both 1994's The Elder Scrolls: Arena and 1996's The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall as freeware games. More information about the history of The Elder Scrolls series can be found at the Bethesda Softworks website. These games are available "as is" and there's no support for them. A DOS emulator like DOSBox is required for newer computers to play them.

Review: Fallout 3: Point Lookout

Point Lookout, the latest downloadable content expansion for Fallout 3, takes a short break from the retro sci-fi theme that defines the rest of the game. Instead, this new area centers on more of a B-movie horror theme. Players get to go to some secluded swamplands and unload using a double-barreled shotgun on its mutated, cannibalistic, locals while confronting a local cult. In the meantime, you end up in the middle of a long running feud, uncover a book of the occult, and brew up some moonshine.
