Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Aspyr sued over PC DRM software

A number of game publishers have been hit with a lawsuit from a company that claims the publishers used their software products illegally. California-based Uniloc filed the lawsuit late in July against a number of companies including Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft and Aspyr Media.

Uniloc claims in its lawsuit that the above companies and others used software that violated one of Uniloc's software patents. The software in question registers on one PC so it cannot be copied on other PCs. The company claims the publisher's actions "have caused reparable and irreparable damage to Uniloc." The company is seeking an unspecified dollar number in damages.

1C Company games to be released DRM free in the US

It's one of the biggest issues in PC games; trying to keep titles from being pirated. While some companies use DRM solutions to "protect" their games from pirates some gamers feel such features actually treat real customers like criminals.

Today 1C Company and Aspyr release Men of War, the first of five games that will ship to stores in the US under their publishing agreement over the next few months. In their press release today announcing that Men of War is now shipping 1C Company announced that the WWII RTS game will not have any DRM solutions. Indeed the other four games being released in the agreement (Death Track: Resurrection, Cryostasis, Necrovision, and 4X4 Hummer) wlll all ship to stores DRM free.

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith ships for the PC and Mac this week

Last year Aspyr Media released a PC and Mac port of Activision's music-rhythm game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock only a few weeks after the console versions from Neversoft and Activision shipped to stores. Today the publisher announced that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the stand alone add-on that was released to consoles last June, has now shipped to stores for the PC and Mac.

Just in case you are not familiar with the game, Guitar Hero Aerosmith contains over 40 new songs for Guitar Hero III fans, including 25 Aerosmith master tracks along with other artists like Stone Temple Pilots, Run DMC and others. If you haven't bought the original game you don't need it to play this title. However if you want to buy both Aspyr will ship out a bundle containing both games on November 4.
