GoG.com puts classic Duke Nukem and other games on sale

With the new rumors that Duke Nukem Forever has been revived over at Gearbox Software running around the interwebs lately, it's perhaps good timing that the DRM-free web site GoG.com has decided to put the last two PC Duke Nukem games on sale this weekend.

As part of their Apogee Pack sale, you can get Duke Nukem 3D and Duke Nukem Manhattan Project for 30 percent off their normal $5.99 price. However you can get both games along with three other classic Apogee titles (Rise of the Triad and both Blake Storm games) in one big bundle for just $14.95, a 50 percent saving, this weekend only. Come get some.

Wired magazine goes in depth with Duke Nukem Forever

It's rare that an article gets as comprehensive on the development of a single game as Wired magazine's latest issue. It's even more unusual for a game that may end up never to be made. Wired's Clive Thompson examines the history of Duke Nukem Forever and the likely fact that a game that was in development for 12 years will never be released.

Unfortunately the article did not secure new interviews with the two main players in the DNF saga, 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller and President George Broussard. However the article does use their previous public statements along with comments from former 3D Realms team members (some anonymous) to paint it's picture of his development history. The article seems to point most of the blame on Broussard who is portrayed as someone who was constantly wanting to update the game with new content and features but who didn't have an actual way to complete the title. In the end that may have doomed both the game and the company behind it.

What does D-Day mean for Duke Nukem?

The saga of Duke Nukem was supposed to be at least on indefinite hold following the layoffs of the entire Duke Nukem Forever team last spring at developer 3D Realms. But is the cigar-chomping and well armed hero making some kind of comeback? The Dukester's allegedly "official" Facebook page has posted up an image that looks like a screenshot from an upcoming game.

The picture is labeled "D-Day preview pic" and was posted on Friday with no other explanation. A couple of days beforehand, "Duke" himself wrote on his Facebook page that he "doesn't stay down for long". So what does all of this really mean? Is this a new game? Is this a game that simply uses the Duke Nukem Forever assets but doesn't use the Duke Nukem trademark? Color us confused.

Two more Apogee games join GoG.com lineup

GoG.com continues to add games from the Apogee/3DRealms line up of titles to its DRM-free library of games. Today two more games can be purchased and downloaded from GoG.com. One is Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project, the 2002 3D side-scroller that has now become the last Duke Nukem game to be released for the PC (yep we are still waiting for Duke Nukem Forever). Our sister site Joystiq is actually giving away 10 free GoG.com copies of the game in a new contest

Also released today is Blake Stone, an early 1993 released first person shooter genre title that mixed sci-fi and super-spy genre. Both Apogee titles can be bought for $5.99 each at GoG.com

Steam Sale: grab Prey this weekend for just $4.95

Valve's Steam digital delivery service has the occasional sale on one or two titles in its ever growing library, usually with modest reductions of 10 percent off their regular price. This weekend's sale, however, is a little more interesting than most. Steam users can purchase the full version of Prey this weekend only for the price of just $4.95. That's a whopping 75 percent cut from its normal price of $19.95.

The 2006 released sci-fi first person shooter from developers Human Head Studios and 3D Realms is still quite an entertaining game; solid graphics, a compelling storyline, and the use of in-game dimensional portals that, while not quite as sophisticated as Valve's own title Portal, still creates gameplay that's different from the normal FPS. With this low of a price, there's no reason not to buy it and check it out for yourself (hey, we know that a sequel is in the early stages of development so this is a good way to get prepared for that prospect, too)
