Many members of the media have been trying to get a hold of Infinity Ward to clarify their decisions regarding the PC port of Modern Warfare 2. Kotaku managed to get the developer's community manager Robert Bowling on the horn but unfortunately he didn't address the issues PC gamers have had with the upcoming shooter directly (no dedicated servers, no word on mod support, etc).

Instead Bowling generalized their decisions regarding the PC version, saying once again they wanted to make the game more accessible to the average player. He dismissed the people who have complained about the changes as a loud minority saying, "We have 14 million players on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The hardcore gamers make up a smaller core of that, and PC gamers are the smallest group of that core. It is a very vocal community and they are all online."

Bowling also feels that because their community is so highly invested in their games, " . . . we should justify every design decision to them." However he also feels that the developer shouldn't be held to those demands completely, saying, "We know our game very well. Some of the stuff you have to put in there and have faith in your design. Some things don't sound good out of context. You don't see the beauty of them until you experience them for yourselves." When asked if the next Modern Warfare game would even be made for the PC, Bowing dodged the question saying that they don't know what their next game will be.

Last September during the Tokyo Game Show, publisher Square Enix announced a collaboration with casual game developer PopCap Games with their upcoming puzzle-RPG Gyromancer. Today it was revealed via a new trailer that the downloadable game would be released for the PC on November 18 for $15.

The game itself has that Square Enix art style for the RPG portion of the game mixed with a Bejeweled Twist puzzle gameplay experience. You can expect to have access to over 50 monsters that can be used in your puzzle-RPG battles across 12 different stages. An online leaderboard will also be made available to compare your scores with others.

While the game's official web site has not posted this news year, Eurogamer is reporting that BioWare has revealed the latest player class for their long awaited MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. During a press event for the game, it was revealed that the Imperial Agent will be one of the eight player classed in the game.

The Imperial Agent, who obviously is with the Empire faction, sounds like the game's version of a super-spy as they have access to lots of high technology and do their work behind the scenes. The Imperial Agent joins the previously revealed classes of Jedi Knights, Smugglers and Troopers on the Republic side and the Sith Warriors and Bounty Hunters working for the Empire. Two more classes are unrevealed.

While most PC developers dread the thought of their games being pirated on torrent web sites, one game developer actually sent a build of their game to pirates site deliberately. Gamesindusty.biz reports that's exactly what happened to Trials 2: Second Edition, the 2008 released racing game from developer RedLynx.

The developer's CEO Tero Virtala said the version of the game they made available to pirate sites lacked the online leaderboards of the full version. His hope was that the pirates would like the game enough to pay for the full version. So far 150,000 copies of the full version have been sold and Virtala states, "When we compare that hacked version with those who have access to leaderboards and are accessing our servers they match. So at least people have not cracked out leaderboards yet."

Way back in May there was a little game that scared my pants off with some truly disturbing imagery and sound. That game was All Of Our Friends Are Dead, and it is still one of the scariest games I have ever played. It doesn't stop with just that game, however, as the developer made a thematic sequel with the confusingly titled Au Sable. Where All Of Our Friends Are Dead was spooky, Au Sable cranks it up even further. There are few games that I have to stop playing for reasons pertaining to creepiness or terror, and none that force me to do it as much as Au Sable did. This is an improvement on All Of Our Friends Are Dead in every way, and that includes the scaring your pants off.

Warhammer Online has been live to the public for over a year now but developer Mythic Entertainment is still refining the fantasy MMO's marketing in terms of bringing new people to the game. Today they announced that they are dumping their 10 day free trial of the game in favor of an "endless" free trial.

What does this mean, exactly? Well instead of having the game not be playable any longer after 10 days without paying for it you can continue to play Warhammer Online in a limited fashioned for as long as you want with the new trial version. You can play a character with any of the careers and take that character up to level 10. You are also limited to some of the tier one locations in the game. It also has the newly launched New User Journey that gives new players more extensive tutorials on how to play the game. Finally the new free trial allows people to start playing after a certain amount is downloaded; the rest of the game's content is streamed in while you play.

The subscription-download hybrid PC game site GameTap has added yet another title to its list of games people can play with one monthly paid subscription. This time the game is Still Life 2, the recently released "M" rated adventure game from publisher Microids. It's a sequel to the 2005 original Still Life which itself was a sequel to a previous 2003 released adventure game Post Mortem.

Still hanging around GameTap's free game selection this week is the American McGee's Grimm chapter Master Thief. It will stay in the free section of the game site until this coming Thursday where it will be replaced with a currently unannounced game.

This trailer reveals in-game footage from James Cameron's Avatar: The Video Game. From the looks of things, heavily armed soldiers will do battle against the alien locals, the Na'vi, in a war over the planet's resources. The Na'vi may look a bit fragile and rely mainly on melee weapons, but they're not pushovers. They're fast and are willing to call upon the local wildlife to aid them. Avatar releases on December 1st.

James Cameron's Avatar "will take you deep into the heart of Pandora, an alien planet that is beyond imagination. Gamers will encounter the Na'vi, Pandora's indigenous people and discover creatures and other wildlife the likes of which have never been seen in the world of video games before. When conflict erupts between the RDA Corporation, a space-faring consortium in search of valuable resources, and the Na'vi, players will find themselves thrust into a fight for the heart of a planet and the fate of a civilization."

In 1979, Moonraker was first shown in movie theaters. It's perhaps the dumbest premise ever for a James Bond movie: A super rich psycho with a Hitler complex decides to kill everyone on Earth via a bio-weapon in favor of his own specially picked humans. In order to kill everyone on the planet all at once he decides to build a space station to fire pods that would disperse the weapon from orbit.

The final battle takes place in and around this space station as a fleet of US Space Marines (yep, that's what they are called) head up in a space shuttle. The Marines and the villainous minions, all wearing bulky space suits, fire at each other with lasers in Earth's orbit. Again, it's really dumb for a James Bond movie but in another context, this kind of space battle had not really been seen before. In fact since Moonraker we have yet to see this kind of space combat duplicated for any other movie or TV show.

In this developer video, the team at Playlogic go into detail about some of the game features found in Fairytale Fights, a hack-and-slash action game where players use fairytale characters to cut a bloody path through hordes of enemies. Players have access to a variety of different weapons and items which work using Real Time Dynamic Slicing, a system that adds special directional effects to the bloodshed.

If you're itching for an action hack-and-slash role-playing game to hold you over until Diablo III releases, then you can't do much better than Torchlight. Developed by Runic Games, with a team comprised largely of people that worked on the original Diablo and Diablo II, this is probably as close as one can get to a Diablo-esque experience without actually summoning the Lord of Terror. Even the music is reminiscent of Diablo. That's not to say that Torchlight is any kind of rehash. The game generally carries a light tone, thanks largely to its cartoonish art style and bright colors. Even in the deepest depths of the mines that run underneath the town of Torchlight, with the blood setting turned on, you won't find a creature that can be characterized as horrific or scary, so the game does a good job of standing out on its own.

This update for Torchlight, an action role-playing game, addresses a list of performance and balance issues. Be aware that it is ONLY meant for the version purchased directly from Runic Games, and those who purchased it from other outlets should check those sites for the appropriate updates. Additionally, players will have to first uninstall the game before executing the patch, then input their game keys. Be sure to keep and/or backup your save games. Full patch notes and installation instructions are shown after the jump.

The patch also doubles as a stand-alone demo for Torchlight and allows for two hours of gameplay.

[Update]: Due to a slight oversight on the developer's part, although the patch really updates Torchlight to v1.12, the game will still show v1.11 on the title screen.

Looks like the so-called "protest" by a group of gamers against the release of Left 4 Dead 2 had just about zero effect on pre-orders for Valve's zombie shooter sequel. According to Computer and Video Games' Valve's Chet Faliszek stated that pre-orders have come in at "four times" the amount of the original game released just a year ago.

And what about those protesters who feel that releasing Left 4 Dead 2 just over a year after the original would split the community and is simply a way for Valve to get more money? Faliszek states that there will always be someone complaining about something and adds, "Honestly I made the joke and it's true: If you put $20 in a box and charge $10 for it someone would complain you didn't put $50 in a box."

A few days ago we reported that the PC version of Star Trek D-A-C would finally be released via Steam on November 17, the same day as the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the Star Trek movie revival. Well, it looks like gamers will get their Trek gaming goodness a few days earlier than planned. The Steam pre-order page has changed the release date. It's now showing a November 12 date for the game to be made available for download.

Pricing for the PC port has still not been revealed on the Steam web site. The top down space shooter from developer Naked Sky Entertainment is scheduled to have a number of extras not available in the first Xbox 360 version.

Gaijin Entertainment, the Russian-based game developer with a Japanese-sounding name, has announced a new PC-only game titled Wings of Prey. This game is a WWII military flight simulator with a pre-order page stating the game will be released in December for $39.99. Pre-orders also apparently get into a closed beta test for the game.

Wings of Prey's press release is boasting of its "Authentic World War atmosphere" with over 40 aircraft and over 50 historically accurate missions covering the air war in Europe. Players can also switch between realistic simulation and a pure fun arcade mode. Four multiplayer modes are promised along with leaderboards, VOIP support, friends lists and other features. You can also look for new plans and missions for the game to be released via download in 2010.

In Split/Second, a racing game being developed by Blackrock Studio and published by Disney, players will be able to trigger massive events to crush the competition. Racers will have to extra alert to avoid these events, but they'll also have to be careful not to get caught in their own traps. Split/Second is scheduled to release in 2010.

If you have been wondering when Sacred 2: Ice and Blood would be released in the US, wonder no more. The expansion pack to the 2008 released action-RPG and the last game from its developer Ascaron Entertainment before its shut down earlier this year, will be heading to the US via Steam on November 13. Pricing for the expansion has yet to be revealed.

According to the Steam pre-order page, Sacred 2 Ice and Blood will add over 30 hours of gameplay to the original game with two new regions to explore along with new monsters, items and a new playable character called The Dragon Mage.

It looks like other download sites have decided to drawn a line in the sand over the decision by Infinity Ward and Activision to incorporate Steamworks into the PC port of Modern Warfare 2. Direct2Drive has already stated it won't sell the upcoming shooter because it intergrates the Steam features into the game. Now Voodoo Extreme reports that Stardock's Impulse won't sell the game either for the same reasons. Furthermore Kotaku reports that GamersGate has confirmed they won't make Modern Warfare 2 available for sale on their stores for the same reasons.

While we again point out that Steam-supported games have been sold by IGN's Direct2Drive in the past (Empire: Total War and Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II) it looks like they and the other two sites have all put their finger down in this case to protest having Steam be a requirement for purchasing Modern Warfare 2. We have emaield Valve, Infinity Ward and Activision for comment.

It's looking like one of the biggest PC game developers, id Software, could decide (and we emphasize "could") not to offer dedicated servers for online multiplayer in their next game Rage. In an article on Variety, id Software' John Carmack is quoted as saying, ""It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers."

The specific reasons for such a move are not really spelled out in the brief article, stating that Carmack felt "the servers are something of a remnant of the early days of PC gaming." However he hasn't closed the door to such a move saying, "We'll see how it works out for everyone else." At the moment Rage won't likely be out until sometime in 2010.

Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford must be flying high on the critical and sales success of their first person shooter Borderlands. And he's not afraid to speak his mind on any number of subjects. A few weeks ago we reported that he made statements that were high critical of Valve, saying their ownership of the Steam download platform was a conflict of Interest and that smaller developers were being exploited. Smaller developers who have worked with Valve to get their games on Steam quickly defended Valve, saying their distribution terms were better than others.

Now Pitchford has reportedly taken a few more shots at Valve's expense. Industry Gamers reports that Pitchford, quoted in a new issue of the U.K.'s Official PlayStation Magazine, stated, "Valve think their own stuff is the only stuff that matters, to the point where they have their own distribution platform." While he does feel Steam itself is a good system he added, " . . . . at the same time they're reliant on the rest of the world. They had to do that [Left 4 Dead] deal with EA. When I see the L4D ad on the television I don't see a Valve logo, I see an EA logo, and when I bought it, I bought it at a store." It's pretty clear that Pitchford would like to see Steam be handled as a separate business with no connections to Valve.

While there is no official outside confirmation of this year, the usually reliable Eurogamer site is reporting that Star Trek Online now has a set release date. According to their article, the US launch for the MMO will occur on February 2, 2010, with the Europeans getting the game few days later on February 5, 2010.

Developer Cryptic Studios had previously confirmed that they would launch the game, based on the massive sci-fi franchise, sometime in the first quarter of 2010. Pre-orders for the game are being taken right now with Amazon.com and Gamestop offering some pre-order bonuses for folks who buy the game from their outlets.

During the Q&A session of Activision Blizzard's financial conference call, an investor asked company execs if they have seen any impact on the sales of the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 due to the game's lack of dedicated server support. Company execs stated they were watching developments on that front closely but that overall they were not that concerned about the impact of those decisions.

The execs reiterated the arguments that Infinity Ward gave when they first announced their move to create a internally run matchmaking system to handle multiplayer matches in the game. This will result in an upper player match limit of 18 compared to the 32 player (or more) that had previously been the case with Call of Duty games in the past.

Activision Blizzard execs also feel that the PC version could be more accessible to an audience that is not used to the dedicated server system. Ultimately they feel the changes will far out way any negatives that will be made with such a move.

In this developer video, the development team at BioWare shocases some of the gruesome creatures players will encounter in Mass Effect 2. Some of what you may have experienced in the first game will prepare you, but it looks like the malevolent aliens will be pulling out the big guns for the sequel. Mass Effect 2 will release in 2010.

Modern Warfare 2 must feel like everyone is piling on it. From the reveal of some controversial scenes to the lack of dedicated servers for the PC version to a unfortunate release of a PSA, the upcoming shooter from Infinity Ward has not had the best publicity. Now yet another issue has popped up as IGN's Direct2Drive site has openly stated they won't provide the downloadable PC version of the game to download.

In a listing for the game on their site, they state:

At Direct2Drive, we believe strongly that when you buy a game from us, you shouldn't be forced to install and run a 3rd party software client to be able to play the game you purchased. Because COD MW 2 requires you, the consumer, to do that, we aren't able to offer the game via Direct2Drive at this time.

They are clearly calling out the game's use of Valve's Steam service to offer automatic updates, among other things, for Modern Warfare 2 as their reason for their refusal to run the game. Direct2Drive is offering a $5 online coupon code on their site to purchase any other game from Activision until Nov. 30. We do find the arguments suspect since other games on Direct2Drive have installs for Steam (like Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II) and Games For Windows Live.

During Activision Blizzard's financial conference call. Blizzard president Mike Morhaime stated that they are currently targeting the long awaited sci-fi RTS sequel StarCraft II to release sometime in the first half of 2010. Previously Blizzard would only admit to a release of the game sometime in the 2010 time period.

While Morhaime stated during the conference call that the development team is working towards the game's beta test launch, he would not confirm any dates on when the beta will actually begin. Last June at E3 the company stated they hoped to have the beta launch during the summer but had to retract that plan when their plans to release StarCraft II changed from their previous fall 2009 date.

Each week we find more and more free games that do not quite fit into the freeware mold. Games that do not require a subscription fee to play, but encourage player usage of money through microtransactions or special subscription services. This is Playing For Free, a column that showcases these games.

Once again, we return to the realm of free-to-play MMO shooters. We've covered Quake Live, Battlefield Heroes, and even Combat Arms, so maybe it's time to tackle something a little more new. CrimeCraft was released in August, and quickly went to the "free unlimited trial" system that boils down to being free-to-play. It's not great, and certainly not better than other free-to-play MMO shooters like Combat Arms (even with insane community), but it's passable and, at least on the surface, unique.

Publisher Activision Blizzard has released its latest financial results for the quarter that ended on September 30 and as it turns out their revenues came in better than they had previously predicted. For the quarter the company brought in $703 million compared to their predictions of $680 million. However the revenues were still slightly lower than the $711 million that the company recorded for the same time period a year ago. Activision Blizzard recorded a profit of $15 million for the quarter compared to a loss of $105 million for the same period a year ago.

Activision's only new PC game product for their current quarter is, of course, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which the publisher has high hopes that it will be one of the biggest game launches of all time. Their overall game line-up for 2010 includes the release of StarCraft II, World of Warcraft Cataclysm and a new Call of Duty game, among others. We are currently listening in on Activision's conference call to see if they will reveal any more info on their future game launches.

2007 saw the release of Shadowrun, a multiplayer-only first person shooter from Microsoft's now defunct FASA Interactive that was very loosely based on the pen-and-paper RPG. While an interesting if flawed game on its own terms, many Shadowrun fans would have preferred a PC game that was closer to its roots. Now some early demo work from an earlier version of the Shadowrun game has popped up on the Internet.

The info comes from the personal site of Robert Olson, currently working at Mad Doc Software but who previously worked at FASA Interactive on an earlier version of the Shadowrun game. Without revealing too many details, the demo that he was a part of seems to be much closer to the spirit of the pen-and-paper game than the version that was actually released. You can see a lengthy movie that apparently comes from the early Shadowrun demo after the jump.

Valve's Steam PC game download service has added a classic character to its library. Earthworm Jim, the weird but cool action game mascot of the now defunct Shiny Entertainment, is now available to download via Steam in a bundle that contains the original game, Earthworm Jim 2 and Earthworm 3D. The bundle costs $19.99 and is the only way to get the games via Steam; they are not sold separately.

In different but related news, Steam has added the three Massive Assault strategy games from Order of War developer Wargaming.net to the service. You can get each game (Massive Assault, Massive Assault: Phantom Renaissance, and Massive Assault Network 2) separately or all three in a bundle package for $59.99. The bundle saves you $29.98 if you bought each game on its own.

Finally Steam has added the recent adventure game Fatale and the action shooter Doom Rails to its library.

It's been a few days since our last giveaway so it's time we gave our Big Download readers a chance to win something cool. In this case we got three Steam download codes to give out that will let the winners download the full version of Shattered Horizon, the just released multiplayer first person shooter from developer Futuremark Games Studios.

As with most of our contests, entering the giveaway is simple:

You may remember a few days ago that folks were getting scammed into sending their personal info thanks to a fake Battlefield Bad Company 2 beta sign up dealie. Well today we have some official news about the beta test for the upcoming first person shooter.

First the bad news: Folks who have a PS3 will get first crack at the beta test for the Digital Illusions-developed game. The PS3 beta begins on November 19 via a code that folks can get when the pre-order the game from several retailers. The good news is that the PC version of the beta will be launched sometime in December and a full blown multiplayer demo will be released for all of the game's platforms in early 2010 ahead of the game's release on March 2.

While Tim Schafer's latest game Brutal Legend has bypassed the PC completely, the last game his did for our platform has finally appeared over at the DRM-free download site GoG.com. Yes, Psychnoauts, the old platform game released in 2005 by publisher Majesco, can now be yours for the low price of $9.99. We can't recommend this game highly enough.

GoG.com has also added Advent Rising, the sci-fi third person action game that Majesco also first released in 2005. While not nearly as good as Psychonauts it was made by the team that now heads up Chair Entertainment and features a story developed by Orson Scott Card. You can grab it at GoG.com for just $5.99.
