Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!

Most of the browser games that have been talked about on Freeware Friday have been by the esteemed Flashbang Studios. However, it's time to break that trend with a game that is just as good as anything Flashbang can or has come up with. Farbs' Captain Forever was released a while ago to those who have donated, with the promise of it being released for free at a later date. That later date has arrived, and Captain Forever is now available to the general public. It's an excellent game, and one that you can easily lose a lot of time to, which makes it both a great freeware game and an amazing browser game.

Valve has yet to release the mod tools for Left 4 Dead 2 (we assume they are coming soon-ish) but in the meantime that hasn't stopped some enterprising mod creators from shoehorning the characters, new zombie bosses and items from the just released shooter sequel into the original Left 4 Dead campaigns.

The L4DMods.com site has the full instructions on how to make this happen. The site puts up plenty of warnings that this kind of thing is not for folks who are unfamiliar with opening up and altering a PAK file but as you can see from the above screenshot it is possible to get Coach, Nick, Noelle and Ellis up north to battle the infected.

This trailer for the Need for Speed SHIFT Team Racing Pack, an upcoming free content expansion, provides fans with a glimpse of some of the big features to expect. As its name indicates, NFS SHIFT players will have to switch their driving styles from individual strategies to more team-oriented ones as they speed down these tacks. Also included are brand new vehicles to muscle against the competition with. Unfortunately, even though the trailer indicates otherwise, the Team Racing Pack isn't available yet. It releases in Europe on December 1st for the PC and Xbox 360 and on December 3rd for the PlayStation 3 console. North American players across all platforms will have to wait until December 10th, but the Need for Speed SHIFT playable demo can be downloaded right now here.

In Dark Void, players are trapped in an alternate dimension after flying through the Bermuda Triangle. In this place, an alien race with a sinister plan to take over human civilization. As demonstrated by this trailer, the aliens come in many different varieties of looks and battle armor. Dark Void is scheduled to release in North America on January 19, 2010 and across Europe on January 22nd.

"Dark Void is an adrenaline-fueled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat which centers on Will, a pilot who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle following a routine mission. Will wakes up to find himself in 'The Void,' an alternate world resembling a primitive earth where aliens with superior technology are planning to take over civilization. It's one of the most revered sci-fi movies of all time, and at one point developer Gearbox Software thought hard about making it into a game. The 1982 classic Blade Runner still holds up well and has been the subject of game adaptations before, most notably a 1997 released action-adventure game from the now defunct Westwood Studios.

On the Official Xbox Magazine web site, Gearbox's head man Randy Pitchford states that at one time Gearbox had pursued getting the Blade Runner game license rights, saying, "We chased it down and we could of had it." However, they decided to abandon their plans for the game after looking at the costs. Pitchford states, " . . . the way we wanted to do it, we wanted to spend 25-million dollars. And when you do the math on that, we weren't going to make it back." That's likely true, although we have to wonder what kind of game design would require such a high budget.

It's been the talk of the internet ever since its presence was leaked online a few weeks before the game came out. But the now infamous "airport level" in Modern Warfare 2 has certainly generated a lot of debate both among gamers and the mainstream media over whether or not it is appropriate. Now the main scriptwriter for Infinity Ward's first person shooter claims the sequence was something they had to do.

GamePro.com's interview with Jesse Stern (who has a day job as a writer for the NCIS TV series) has him talking extensively about that airport level, where Russian terrorists mow down unarmed civilians. He states, "Every single person in testing opened fire on the crowd, which is human nature." He adds, "I hope that people don't just look at it as being this simplistic and brutal sequence. We've done our best to treat it with care and not to make it gratuitous."

Ultimately Stern feels that the sequence was worth putting into the final product, saying, "This is a triple-A game and the top grosser of all time with this huge budget behind it, yet we're still taking major chances wherever we can and the airport level was a risk we had to take. Sometimes you take huge risks and it really works. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. But if you don't take the chance, you're not going to make something new."

Fans of Need For Speed Shift have likely been wondering if Electronic Arts would be offering any downloadable extras for the racing sim. Today EA sent the word out that the first such free DLC is on its way. Owners of the PC version will be able to download the DLC on December 1.

The free extras will include the addition of four American classic muscle cars and one import sports car to the game (1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427, 1967 Shelby GT-500, 969 Dodge Charger R/T, 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T, 1998 Toyota Supra Mark). It will also add the Team Racing online gameplay mode where two teams of up to six cars battle it out in stock vehicles.

One of the most critical voices of the game industry, particularly of how games handle violent content, is closing its doors. The non-profit National Institute On Media and The Family has announced that due to lack of funding it will officially shut down by the end of the year.

Formed in the mid-1990s by psychologist Dr. David Walsh, the group was best known for its Video Game Report Card which it issued every year with backing from US lawmakers. The report card always gave failing grades to games which had lots of violent or adult content, even games that had gotten rave reviews from game critics. According to WCOO's web site, Dr Walsh stated that despite his group's shut down he feels that it had a positive effect on keeping certain games away from children. He states, "The fact that the retailers will no longer sell video games, adult video games to little kids, is something we take a great deal of pride in."

This short but sweet gameplay video, captured in a BioShock 2 competitive multiplayer session, reveals many of the weapons and abilities players can look forward to using. Besides the freeze power, there also appears to be the teleportation power that was removed from the first game before it released due to game balance issues. It looks like those issues got worked out in the sequel.

Usually Mac gamers get the shaft when it comes to getting native ports of previously released PC games. If they are released at all they usually are behind by months or even years after the PC versions are out. In the case of Star Trek D-A-C that's not the case at all as the Mac port of the movie-based game is now scheduled for release this December.

Transgaming is handling the Mac port duties for the game which was originally created by Naked Sky Entertainment. If you have a Macand have a hankering for some movie-based top down space shooting action, you can go ahead and pre-order the downloadable Star Trek D-A-C port for $8.99 at the GameTree online web site.

While technically this isn't official we are going to go ahead and call this puppy anyway. Next week we should see the release via Steam of Serious Sam HD, the graphical remake of Croteam's first game in its first person shooter series. The news comes via a rep from the game's co-publisher Devolver Digital who stated on the Seriously message boards, "If you preordered on Steam I think you will be very happy on the 24th."

We assume he means November 24 and if that's correct then the game should be ready to go on Tuesday. The game was also supposed to be released for Xbox Live Arcade but so far there no word on when that might happen.

Even though the market share for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 is only a small percentage of the total sales for the first person shooter, the sheer number of units sold for the Infinity Ward-developed game in its first days could still be in the six figure range for the PC port. We've already taken a stab at what those numbers might be like. Now comes word from Infinity Ward itself that the PC version is indeed selling well.

In a post on the company's official message boards, community manager Robert Bowling states that while the PC port does have the smallest market share of all three versions of the game, that doesn't mean the PC version is not a big seller. He writes, "The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has actually outsold the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in its first week. Making it the most successful PC version." Specific sales numbers were not mentioned. One wonders how many more copies would have been sold if Infinity Ward had opted to support dedicated servers.

For a little while it looked like PC multiplayer gamers might not be very happy with the upcoming revival of Aliens Vs Predator. Comments made by a Sega producer for the first person shooter last month cast doubt that the game would have dedicated servers for playing the online aspects of the PC version

Well, multiplayer gamers can breath a little easier now. An email press release sent to Big Download from the game's developer Rebellion quotes the company's CEO Jason Kingsley as saying, "Despite rumours, Rebellion has always been planning to support dedicated servers for AvP PC and we can now officially confirm that this is the case." The game, which will also be one of the first DirectX11-supported PC games, is due out in February 2010.

Cryptic Studios' upcoming sci-fi MMO Star Trek Online is less than three months away from launching from its virtual drydock If you are not picked to take part in the game's current closed beta test, there's no reason to worry as Cryptic has now announced that they will hold an open beta for the game.

According to a post on the game's official web site the open beta will begin on January 12 with beta keys to be given out on a first come, first served basis. The open beta period will last until January 26 which will give Cryptic a little breathing room until Star Trek Online officially engages (hehe) on February 2.

It's just over a week until Black Friday 2009 hits and tons of retailers are cutting prices to the bone for the biggest sales day of the year. If you happen to find yourself at a GameStop store on that day you will be able to get a few PC game bargains. The biggest one has to be for the just released Left 4 Dead 2. Valve's zombie shooter sequel will be on sale during Black Friday for just $29.99. That's a massive $20 price cut on a game that was just released this week.

After reaching the top of the sales charts in the UK, Blood Bowl is now coming to North America. This free patch adds on a ninth all-new faction to the game existing game: the dreaded Dark Elves. The trailer shown above shows these devious players in action. Be aware that his patch is for the original version purchased directly from the official website, and not the one that's releasing on Steam next week, which already includes the Dark Elves.

While the fantasy-themed sports-strategy game Blood Bowl has been available via download for US gamers since it's official release last June, we suspect not a lot of folks knew that they could grab this unusual mix of genres from developer Cyanide Studio. That may change, however, with the announcement today that the game will be made available for download on Thanksgiving (appropriate for a game based loosely on American football) via the much higher profile Steam service

The Steam version will include all of the content of the previous edition and will add the new Dark Elves faction to the game's eight other playable sides (owners of the previous version can download a free update that adds the new faction). Steam is also offering a 10 percent pre-order discount to the game before it goes live. If you are looking for a very different game experience, Blood Bowl might be up your alley.

Combine a upcoming game about a jetpack-flying hero with arguably the most well-known movie star on the planet and you might have yourself a good movie. Capcom certainly hopes so as it announces today that Brad Pitt's production company Plan B Entertainment has bought the movie rights to Dark Void, the upcoming third person action game from developer Airtight Games.

The press announcement states that the movie is being prepped for a "potential starring vehicle for Pitt". He's been known to delve into the sci-fi and fantasy genre before in movies like 12 Monkeys, Interview with the Vampire and (ugh) Meet Joe Black. No studio, writer or director have been announced yet for the Dark Void movie. In the meantime the game is due for release for the PC and other platforms on January 19, a few days later than the previously announced January 15 release date.

Microsoft's last major update to their Games For Windows Live online service was a few months ago with the 3.0 client update. Today the company released a minor update to the the client that can be downloaded when you sign onto the service.

Besides unnamed bug fixes there are two notable upgrades that Microsoft mentions in its release notes. One is an update to the in-game client to "support DirectX 11 for future titles". That's good since the first out-of-the-box DirectX11 title, Codemasters' Dirt 2, is due for release on December 1. The other update is for the downloadable stand alone client "to make finding content for games easier."

While some games have attempted to merge the first person shooter genre with elements from RTS games (The Savage series, Command and Conquer: Renegade) none have been deemed a complete success. Today publisher Reality Gap officially launched Battleswarm: Field of Honor, a sci-fi themed free-to-play online game that was originally developed by Asian developer Gameworld Tech. The game itself has one side (the human solider) in a first person view point. They go up against the other (side the bug-like aliens) who have an RTS game play design.

On the occasion of today's official launch of Battleswarm, Big Download got a chance to ask some questions to Reality Gap's Chief Operating Office Mark Hood as he talks about the game, how Pong creator Nolan Bushnell is involved and more.

It's been a few months since there's been a lot of new content uploaded to Blizzard's StarCraft II web site. That changed today as the site added an additional 17 new screenshots for the upcoming sci-fi RTS blockbuster (we have reproduced them and put them in our ever growing StarCraft II gallery). The shots are a mix of gameplay visuals with some in-game engine cinematics like the shot you see above.

In addition to the new visuals, there are also some articles on the process of making 1v1 multiplayer maps for the game as well as how Blizzard's development team will be creating the single player story/campaign. There's even a new StarCraft II-based short story to check out that focuses on the new Zerg Changling unit. And no, there's still no word on the beta test . . . sorry.

Cryptic Studios' super hero MMO Champions Online has already had one free content update since its September launch. On Tuesday the game gets a second free update that not only adds new perks and costume sets to the MMO but adds a new lair and adventure as well.

The update is called Nemesis Confrontation and has your noble player characters fighting to get out of an intergalactic prison to deal with their Nemeses, the alien Gladiators and the creature who gathered them together, the super evil Shadow Destroyer. As you can see from the screenshots the Gladiators have some . . . kinky costume styles. If you want to try out the update a little earlier Nemesis Confrontation is currently on Champions Online's test server. In addition to the free update, the entire game will be free to play for any newbies from November 26-30.

Just yesterday we got wind of some new screenshots and a "spring 2010" release date for Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander 2. Today we got a new press release from publisher Square Enix' PR folks that should make many fans of the original sci-fi RTS title happy. The PC sequel is now set for a March 2, 2010 release date (the Xbox 360 version won't be available until two weeks later on March 16).

With this game coming out in early March and Command and Conquer 4 due out on March 16, it looks like the first month of spring will have two big powerhouse sci-fi RTS games battling it out for supremacy. At least they will be out of range of StarCraft II which we don't think will be ready before late April at the earliest.

After being left out of a lot of the "special" packages for games, PC gamers get a pretty nice one with the announcement today of the BioShock 2 Special Edition. As revealed today on the Cult of Rapture community site, the collector's edition of the upcoming 2K Marin-Digital Extremes-2K Games first person shooter will be released for the PC for $89.99 alongside the regular edition on February 9. There will just be one production run on this puppy so quantities will be limited.

In addition to the game of course, the Special Edition comes with a 164 page hardcover art book with developer commentary, a CD with the BioShock 2 soundtrack, a vinyl LP with songs from the first BioShock game, and three posters with Rapture city ads. All of the contents will be put into a special 13x13 inch package. It's actually looking like it will be worth the $30 bucks.

Fans of BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins have already been able to download some extra content for the fantasy RPG. Today BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts announced plans to offer up another extra downloadable quest for the game. The DLC, titled Return to Ostagar, is due for release "this holiday season". That most likely means it will be available for download before the end of 2009.

The new quest will return players "to the fateful battleground in Ostagar" where they will "discover King Cailan's top-secret political agenda." Wow. Sounds a little bit like our world has entered into BioWare's fantasy kingdom. The DLC will cost 400 "BioWare points" (about $5) to download. We don't like the idea of purchasing "BioWare points" to download extra content but . . .oh well.

The largest game retailer in the US, GameStop, reported its latest financial results today and they are mostly on the higher side. For its third fiscal quarter that ended on October 31, the retailer had $1.83 billion in revenues, up from $1.70 billion from the same period a year ago. Profits were $52.2 million, up from $46.7 million from the same period a year ago.

Of course those numbers don't include game sales from this month where some of the biggest releases of the year like Dragon Age Origins, Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 will surely increase sales even more at the retailer. Indeed GameStop states in its press release, " . . . we expect a solid fourth quarter in sales and earnings." We would think so, too.

If you haven't gone through the entire campaign for Left 4 Dead 2 you might want to avoid reading the rest of this post . . . . ok, for the rest of you, you likely know that in the Dark Carnival campaign for Valve's just released zombie shooter sequel, there are mentions of the Midnight Riders, a fictional Southern rock band that was set to play at the amusement park at the center of the campaign before the infected apocalypse hit. Indeed the final campaign level has the four survivors facing off against the zombies on the Midnight Riders' stage.

The campaign level has posters for the group which showed a web page. Checking out the web page in the real world shows the image you see above. The big question: Is this just some viral fun from Valve or a hint that we could see a Left 4 Dead 2 DLC campaign featuring players controlling the rock group? Hey, there are four members there.

It's happened again. Only a few months after a leaked YouTube video revealed that CD Projekt was indeed working on its fantasy RPG sequel The Witcher 2 comes yet another video that shows more footage from the upcoming game. This time the footage is much less clear; it comes from someone filming a screen that shows Witcher 2 gameplay.

Big Download received a press release from CD Projekt stating the footage came from "a demonstration of the game during the so-called business days of the IGROMIR game expo in Russia." CD Projekt says it declared a ban of all filming and photos from the event but apparently someone just didn't care. It added, "Just like last time, we will not comment on that. Simultaneously, we can assure you that all confirmed information will be revealed soon after the game is officially announced." You can check out the YouTube video after the jump:

Last May, a study by the Jon Peddie Research group predicted that the PC gaming hardware market would suffer a 7 percent drop in 2009 due in part to the effects of the current worldwide economic recession. Now the same group is announcing that new research shows the market will actually grow this year to $21.26 billion, up 5.6 percent from 2008.

The reversal is due to what the study shows is a "higher than anticipated consumer demand for Enthusiast, Performance, and Mainstream hardware." In addition, the study claims that 2010 will see a massive surge in this category to $27.617 billion, up 30 percent from this year's predicted numbers.

Epic Games made huge news recently with their release of the Unreal Development Kit, which gave anyone free access to most of Epic' Unreal Engine 3 tools to make their own stand alone games. Now Crytek is doing something similar with its new CryEngine 3 game development tech but on a smaller scale.

Today Crytek announced that it will allow its CryEngine 3 tools to be made available for free to schools for use in their courses and for research projects. While not as broad as Epic's offer with their UDK release, having a powerful tool like CryEngine 3 in game development classes and other educational projects is certainly going to be a big help for budding game creators and others wanting to learn more about 3D graphics development. The first actual game that is scheduled to use CryEngine 3 is Crytek's own FPS Crysis 2 which is due out in 2010.
