As id Software prepares to say "good-bye" to their long time publishing partner Activision with their upcoming game Wolfenstein, the publisher is promoting its August 4 release with a series of animation shorts on Gametrailers.com that tells the back story of William "B.J." Blazkowicz before the events of the new game.

The first animated short (we might call it a "motion comic" since the animation is so limited) basically is a retelling of the original Wolfenstein 3D game, complete with a Hitler with multiple chainguns. Supposedly there will be new shorts like this released every week until the Raven Software-developed game is released next month. You can check out the video after the jump.

Back in the day, PC gamers had two great shareware shoot-em-ups to choose from: Raptor and Tyrian. While many chose Raptor (whose full name is Raptor: Call of the Shadows), the clear winner in terms of care and quality is Tyrian. Oozing professionalism from every pore, Tyrian sports some excellent pixel art, music, and gameplay elements. It was also the launching pad for Alex Brandon, whose may be better known for his work on Unreal Tournament or Deus Ex. However, the original programmer, in a fit of generosity, decided to release the games as freeware, and the game engine as open source. Thus, new generations can be exposed to the genius shmup gameplay of Tyrian... for free!

Reality Pump Studios knows how to confuse us big time. Their 2007 fantasy RPG Two Worlds was supposed to be followed by an expansion pack called Two Worlds: The Temptation. However those plans changed and in 2008 Two Worlds: The Temptation turned into a full fledged stand alone sequel.

That game was supposed to be released late in 2008 but obviously that didn't happen. Now it appears Reality Pump is going old school by renaming their sequel. It's now simply called Two Worlds II with Reality Pump now promising it will be out sometime this winter. The game itself takes place two years after the original and the developer promises to show us not only new locations in the fantasy world of Eastern Antaloor but graphic engine and AI improvements . . . at least until their next title change.

With all of the networking issues in Demigod now corrected, its publisher Stardock can now put more emphasis on their next major game release, the internally developed fantasy strategy-RPG Elemental: War of Magic. This week, Stardock head Brad Wardell posted up some new screenshots from the game on it's official web site and we have added those shots to our gallery. It's been a while since we have seen new shots with Wardell saying, "We've been hesitant to show too many screenshots until the shadowing is in."

Beta testing for the game should begin "in around 60 days" according to Wardell so expect it to start around the end or August or early September. As usual with Stardock's games, anyone can enter the beta by simply pre-ordering the game now.

One of the big complaints about Left 4 Dead 2 from fans is that the upcoming sequel to the zombie shooter will basically kill support for the original Left 4 Dead. At the time of the sequel's unveiling at E3 last month, developer Valve made it clear that they still planned to support and add content to the original game.

While we still don't know what that content will be like, Computer and Video Games has a quote from Valve's Doug Lombardi who states, "There will be some announcements coming before summer's out about what's coming there . . ". Let's hope so; we don't need another online petition, do we?

It looks like game publisher Midway will soon by no more. A story on the Chicago Tribune web site reports that Warner Bros. has been cleared by a Delaware bankruptcy judge to purchase two of Midway's development studios (Chicago and Seattle) along with most of the company's IPs, including the Mortal Kombat franchise. As previously announced Warner Bros. will pay $33 million for those assets.

And what about the other two Midway studios not bought by Warner Bros. (the ones in the UK and San Diego)? Our sister site Joystiq reports via a Midway spokesperson that they are required by law to shut down the studios within 60 days. There's no word yet if any other companies might be interested in acquiring those studios but the UK studio is trying to promote their own open world action game, Necessary Force, as a last ditch attempt to get a publisher to buy their studio.

The three live action films based on the Resident Evil game franchise have always been very loosely based on the Capcom games but the movies have always made their money back and more thanks to relatively low budgets, solid box office returns and high sales of the DVD and Blu-Ray versions. So it's no shock to hear that a fourth Resident Evil movie might be in the works.

According to Shocktillyoudrop.com a "studio source" at Sony's Screen Gems division has supposedly confirmed that the movie, to be titled Resident Evil: Afterlife, is in the works with Sony wanting to put the movie in theaters by September 17, 2010. There's no word yet if the star of the three previous movies, Milla Jovovich, will return for the fourth filick.

There are only a few games with less of a story than Asteroids. The classic sci-fi shooter from Atari is bascially you shooting stuff that are supposed to be rocks in space with an icon that's supposed to be a laser-armed space ship. Pac-Man has more of a plot. Yet, the Hollywood Reporter states that several studios were actually in a recent bidding war to get the movie rights to the game.

The story repors that Universal "won" the bidding war and that screenwriter Matthew Lopez is handling the "adaptation" (he basically has a clean slate to write whatever he wants, we imagine). Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who also produced the awful Doom movie adaptation, is one of the producers of this flick. We hope Universal will get its money back from this deal.

Oh brother . . . will this never end? The team at Phantom Entertainment, the makers of the long awaited (and long delayed) Phantom Lapboard PC gaming oriented keyboard have run into trouble, this time with the US Securites and Exchange Commission. They have halted the trading of stocks in Phantom Entertainment " because they have not filed certain periodic reports with the Commission."

All of this sounds like a repeat of what happened when the company was called Infinium Labs and its now former CEO was accused by the SEC of running an illegal "pump and dump" scheme to boost the price of the company's stock. The company's current CEO John Landino states on the company's blog site, "We are not the company of 2002 - We could have easily taken the easy way out and just shut our doors and quit, but we stayed to push through the bias of the media and Shorters out there to prove that we can be a new company to launch our product, and grow from there." He claims the first shipment of the Phantom Lapboard will happen sometime this month but at this point we will believe it when we see it. And so the drama continues . . .

Activision has released a playable PC demo for Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the just released game adaption of the third movie in the CGI animated series. Yes you can play with the characters from the movie like Scrat, Sid, Manny and Diego as they discover a lost world of dinosaurs. The demo comes from developer Eurocom.

After a 24 hour delay, owners of Relic's Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II can now download the open beta update for the sci-fi RTS game via Steam. In order to access the beta, titled "There Is Only War" you first select "file" in the Steam client and then click "change" under the "beta participation" section. Then select "Dawn of War 2" and restart Steam. The beta patch should then start downloading.

You can check out the massive patch list at the game's official web site. The patch includes support for the World Builder map editor and the official web site also has a PDF file with documentation on how to map a simple map using the tool. The patch, as we have mentioned before, has also eight new multiplayer maps the new Observer feature and lots of other new features, balances changes and bug fixes. The beta period will last until July 13.

1C Company has released the first gameplay trailer from Men of War: Red Tide. This trailer shows off gameplay from the upcoming stand alone expansion pack to the WWII strategy game that was developed by Best Way. Men of War: Red Tide is scheduled to be released later this fall.

Sometimes games are actually released earlier than expected. Such is the case for Trine, the long awaited downloadable fantasy themed action-puzzle game from developer Frozenbyte. While the game was supposed to be released tomorrow for the PC, the full version of the game is now available to download via Steam right now.

As we mentioned earlier this week, the Steam version of Trine costs $29.99, which is $10 more than the Playstation 3 downloadable version (that port has yet to be released as of this writing). Of course if you were smart you would have pre-ordered the game via Steam and gotten a $9.99 title from Frozenbyte for free (Shadowgrounds). You can download a free demo right here at Big Download to see if you think Trine might be worth the extra $10.

It's a game that was in danger of being canceled but now a new publisher has flown in (hehe) to save the day. We are talking about Heroes Over Europe, the WWI action-flying game from developer Transmission Games. Today Ubisoft announced that they are the new publisher of the title and plan to release the game sometime in September.

The game's future was in doubt earlier this year when it was revealed that the developer had not received a payment from its co-publisher Red Mile Entertainment and as such pulled out of their agreement with Red Mile. Atari, the other co-publisher, also decided to terminate its agreement at the same time. Ubisoft' s new publishing deal announcement also came with nine new screenshots from the game that we have added to our gallery.

Just a few years ago Microsoft was one of the most prolific first and third party publishers for PC games, releasing titles like the Age of Empires/Mythology series, the Microsoft Flight Simulator series, the Mechwarrior series, Freelancer, Impossible Creatures, Rise of Nations and many more. However Microsoft has been doing some cost cutting in the past 18 months as they have shut down a number of their internal PC developers such as ACES Studio and Ensemble Studios while cutting back their third party PC game publishing lineup.

At the same time, Microsoft has tried to work with third party publishers on their Games For Windows marketing push for PC games, They have also tried to improve their Games For Windows Live online service which got off to a rocky start just over two years ago but has made improvements since then. Big Download got a chance to chat with Michael Wolf, the Senior Marketing Manager for Games for Windows Live, to get an update on their PC game development and publishing plans and their future plans for Games For Windows Live.

Released earlier this week, Ubisoft has now sent out a launch trailer for Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, the M-rated Wild West shooter from developer Techland. The game has received solid reviews so far but at the moment there's no word on if a demo for the game will be released.

It's a game that we have been waiting for a long time to get our hands on and today Sega took the unusual move of announcing a release date for a game that isn't due out for over three months. The game in question is Alpha Protocol and the Obsidian Entertainment-developed action-RPG is now due out in stores on October 6.

The Unreal Engine 3-powered take on the super-spy genre has also picked up a newly revealed sub-title: The Espionage RPG. Perhaps Sega wasn't too sure that the Alpha Protocol title was good enough to identify the game as part of the spy genre.

It's somewhat rare for a game to get a solid release date several months in advance these days but that's what's happing to the upcoming fantasy RPG Risen. Today the game's publisher Deep Silver announced that the game from developer Piranha Bytes will ship to stores worldwide on October 2.

The press release announcing the release date proudly states, "The contents of Risen are already complete, and all dialogs have been recorded." They also state that three separate quality assurance teams are working to complete Risen. Let's hope that three teams is enough to squash all the issues in Risen and avoid what happened with Piranah Bytes' last game Gothic 3 where the game shipped with lots of bugs.

Like other PC game download sites this week, the Steam service is starting their weekend sales pitch a little bit early thanks to the US-based Fourth of July holiday. Today Steam announced that for the next few days the price of the hit Bethesda Softworks RPG Fallout 3 will have a 50 percent price cut.

Yep, that means that the highly acclaimed 2008 game, which is normally $49.99 on Steam, can now be bought for the next few days for just $24.99. It's too bad that you can't download the four (so far) mini-expansions to the game via Steam as well.

The PC game download site Gametap updates their library of titles every Thursday and today is no except. This week they are adding the adventure game Runaway: Dream Of The Turtle for their premimum users. Also, the Rebellion-developed action game Rogue Trooper will be free to play via Gametap for the next week.

However the official GameTap blog is reporting some bad news; they are now removing nearly all of the Myst based games from their library of titles. According to the blog the surprise removal of the games was "due to an external conflict between (developer) Cyan Worlds and (publisher) Ubisoft" The one exception is RealMYST, the fully 3D remake of the original game.

The DRM-free web site GoG.com isn't done with us yet this week. The classic PC game site has a couple of extra additions to their growing library to tell you about. One of them is Personal Nightmare, a classic horror-adventure game from developer Adventure Soft. It was released way back in 1989 making this title the oldest in GoG.com's library. You can download and play it now for $5.99.

GoG.com has also added Crystals of Arborea and Ishar III to its Ishar Compilation of RPG games. You can now get all four games in the series for just $5.99. If you already bought the collection when it just had two games, you can now get the two additional titles for free.

Eidos's recent WWII action-strategy game Battlestations Pacific was released last May and later this month folks who picked up the title will be able to download two new content update for the game. One of these updates is called the Mustang Pack which will add six new units to the game including the P-51 Mustang plane, the US Navy's Alaska Class cruiser and the Japanese Super Yamato Class, a bigger version of the legendary Yamato battleship that in real life was never made.

The second content update is the Carrier Battles Map Pack which adds four new maps to the game that can be played on all five of Battlestations Pacific's multiplayer modes. The map pack even includes a level set in Aleutian Islands near Alaska. PC owners can download the Mustang Pack sometime today for 160 Microsoft points on Games For Windows Live. The Carrier Battles Map Pack will be released on July 23 for 800 Microsoft points.

It's time for our now daily StarCraft II news post. Today we offer up something that we know will be of interest to the hardcore fans of Blizzard's upcoming sci-fi RTS sequel. Yes indeed . . .you guessed correctly. We have some visuals showing off the technology trees for all three of the game's factions (Terran, Zerg and Protoss).

Of course, these images (as supplied by the Giant Bomb web site) cannot be considered final since we haven't even entered the real beta test for the game. As such, these tech tree configurations could (and most likely will) change before the final game comes out (please, oh pretty please let it come out this year, Blizzard). Still if you want to know what you have to do to get to the Terran Battlecruiser, you now know what Blizzard is thinking at the moment.

Have you ever wonder what it might be like to be a captain of a massive sailing ship 300 years ago? Well Paradox Interactive is giving you a chance to at least put a virtual version of yourself in that role in a new contest to promote their upcoming historical strategy game East India Company.

Simplle send a picture of yourself and why you would make the "perfect commander" for the Nitro Games-developed title and send that info into the address that's given in the official rules by July 16. Three people will be picked and have their likenesses put into the game as in-game characters in a patch after East India Company is released on July 28.

Games can can adapted into movies, comic books and even prose stories and now CCP has announced that a new novel set in their space-based MMO EVE Online is due for release in November. The book, titled, EVE: The Burning Life, is being written by CCP team member Hjalti Daníelsson, who has written much of the game's storylines.

The plot apparently revolves around a man who is the loan survivor of an attack on deep space mining colony and a woman "agent of death" who leaves her gig on her own personal journey. These two people's lives intersect in a story that will "plunge them into the darkest parts of space where they encounter denizens of the chaotic and dangerous pirate kingdoms." Sounds painful. Anyway, the novel will be published by Tor Books in trade paperback and in hardcover and is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

Most of the time we really don't care about new trademarks filed by game companies. Quite frankly, filing trademarks is easy; it's making the games that's the hard part. However we will make a small exception for this mention of a new trademark from Blizzard Entertainment who seems to milk its previous IPs (Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo) for all they are worth (which is quite a bit actually).

According to game trademark-hunting web site superannuation, Blizzard has put in a trademark for "Catalysm" that will cover "computer games, paper-based products, and online games". Our sister site WoW.com hints that the name could be used for an upcoming World of Warcraft expansion pack or it could be used for . . . something else. Anyway, as we said, it's not the title that's really important . . is it?

Usually 2K Sports sneaks in an announcement of one of their titles coming to the PC just before it shipped to stores but today the sports game brand of Take Two Interactive officially confirmed that they will be releasing a PC version of NBA 2K10, the next game in their pro basketball series.

As you can see by the box cover of the game, LA Lakers star Kobe Bryant is the featured player for NBA 2K10 which is being developed by the sports game veterans over at Visual Concepts. We just hope that 2K Sports doesn't repeat the mistake they made for NBA 2K9 when they shipped the PC version without the required CD key.

Looks like we will have to wait another day or so before we can get our hands on the 1.4 beta patch for Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II. The patch from Relic and THQ was supposed to be made available via Steam today but a note on the game's official web site states, "We are experiencing an unforeseen technical problem and believe it will be resolved in the next 24 hours."

Just a reminder: this is an open beta for the 1.4 update to the sci-fi RTS title that will contain eight new multiplayer maps, a new Observer feature, the World Builder map editor and lots of other cool stuff.

Despite the fact that we live in the 21st century, fantasy as a genre is still with us, and shows no signs of going away any time soon. As an environment, it is so poorly defined that it can take the aesthetic of nearly anything, provided that certain tropes are in place: swords, archery, royalty, magic, assorted humanoid monsters with orcs being the mainstay, and the like. Temporally, there is a nebulous period of time during which all fantasy takes place, but you recognize it when you see it.

However, it's this vagueness that lends itself to abuse. Stylistically, there is little to cause any one fantasy-themed game to stand out from any other. And how many times can you get excited about playing the same character class over and over again? I'm in favor of any attempt to leave the stale fantasy genre behind and striking out into new territory, but how can we replace it, and with what?

Electronic Arts has released a launch trailer for their game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The game, based on the upcoming sixth movie in the fantasy film series (itself based on the novel by J.K. Rowling) is shipping to stores this week. The July 4 weekend is just a few days away and it looks like some downloadable PC game sites are getting a head-start on offering deals from their library of titles. Impulse has put several of their games on sale for the holiday period including a Sins of the Solar Empire bundle (with the original space strategy game and its mini-expansion Entrenchment) for $29.99. It has also put all of the Unreal franchise games on sale for 25 percent off.


Meanwhile Strategy First has put all of their games on sale for 50 percent off at their online store. This includes their "Take No Prisoners" bundle which has a whopping 20 games. During the sale you can get the bundle for a mere $34.99. The sale lasts until July 12.

Update: GamersGate has annouced they will put one game on sale on their site every day in July for at least 50 percent off. Here is the list of games for the first week:

July 1: Buccaneer: The Pursuit of Infamy - 75 percent

This is the official launch trailer for Fuel, which was released for the PC platform this week by publisher Codemasters. The trailer shows off a little more than a minute of the the off-road racing features in this new game from French developer Asobo Studios.

We've got yet another nice little pre-order offer to give you a heads-up on today. Stardock's Impulse PC game download service has the PC version of the recent console action game Red Faction Guerilla available for pre-order. The PC port of the Volition-THQ game will be released via download on Impulse on August 25.

However, all pre-orders for the game will be able to get not one but two free games; the original Red Faction (first released in 2001) and its sequel Red Faction 2 (released for the PC in 2003). Yep, that's two free games for the price of buying Red Faction: Guerilla for $39.99. Not bad at all.
