By 1996, the Command & Conquer franchise was already well established. However, for its first major follow-up, the development team at Westwood Studios took the series in a slightly different direction. C&C: Red Alert, a spin-off series, was a more campy and humorous than the main game it sprang from.In it, Einstein invents a time machine and uses it to eliminate Hitler before he rises to power. The result is the Soviets rising up as a world power and invading Allied nations instead of the Germans. With an alternate history version of the 1950's, Red Alert had US and Soviet forces fighting it out. The over-the-top units and features like online gameplay kept things entertaining.Two more Red Alert based C&C games have since been released, the latest of which shipped in 2008 (with a stand alone downloadable expansion in 2009). Many C&C fans consider the Red Alert line to be the best in the franchise. 23/04/09
