Sam & Max Hit the Road
Sam & Max originally started as a comic book creation of Steve Purcell. LucasArts adopted the duo and created a highly entertaining and fun adventure game featuring the Freelance Police. Sam is an anthropomorphous dog and Max is a violent rabbitty thing.
Released in 1993 at the height of LucasArts' adventure game era, an arguement could be made that Sam & Max Hit The Road was the best of the bunch thanks to challenging gameplay and especially the over-the-top humor.
LucasArts canceled plans for a Sam and Max revival (along with all other adventure game projects) several years ago, which caused a group of developers to leave the compnay and form TellTale Games. TellTale currently produces the new Sam & Max episodic series.
