Doom
What more can we write about Doom, one of the biggest and most influential games in history? Well we will try anyway.
Released as shareware in 1993, id Software took the formula for Wolfenstein 3D, added in much improved graphics, threw in some truly scary scenes and monsters and put in LAN-based deathmatch to boot. In short, it rocked.
The shareware version of Doom is said to have been installed in more PCs than Windows at the time. id made a quick and dirty sequel, Doom II, a year later but waited several years before a true sequel, Doom III, was released. id is now in early development on a fourth game.
