Wolfenstein 3D

id Software had many shareware hits before the release of Wolfenstein 3D in 1992 but that particular game took the entire PC game industry in a new direction: the first person shooter.

No longer were players controlling avatars from a distance. They were the player, seeing things and interacting with the environment at ground level. Oh, and there was a cyber-Hitler.

Wolfenstein 3D continues to be a popular title. In fact id just ported the game to the iPhone. The game franchise was revived with Return to Castle Wolfenstein several years later and a new entry, simply called Wolfenstein, is due for release this year.
