Dune II
When did the real-time strategy gaming begin? While there are examples of such games before 1992, many people believe it really started at Westwood Studios with Dune II. This game, based on the Frank Herbert sci-fi novels, introduced the idea that strategy was fluid and constantly changing.
Released in 1992, Dune II introduced the idea of having the PC mouse go over units and order them to move, which is the basis of nearly all RTS game released since.
Westwood went on to make the Command & Conquer series but later remade Dune II as Dune 2000 in 1998. In 2001, a full sequel (Emperor: Battle for Dune) was released.
