Wing Commander: Privateer
With the success of the first Wing Commander game, Origin Systems decided to take a chance and expand the franchise in a slightly new direction. The result was Wing Commander: Privateer which came out in 1993.
While the main series had your character as a noble naval officer, Privateer's main character was a freelancer, which meant he could be a merchant, mercenary, pirate or even a little of each. The open ended gameplay of Privateer made it stand out from other games, and it pretty much set the bar for similar games that came out later.
Two expansion packs were released for the original game and in 1996 Privateer 2: The Darkening was released. That game used full motion video and Hollywood actors, much like Wing Commander III did.
