SimCity 2000
Will Wright and his Maxis team hit it big with the original SimCity, proving that the creation of an urban metropolis could work as an entertaining game. SimCity 2000, released in 1993, was more than just a graphical remake of the original.
The viewpoint of the game itself changed from an overhead vantage to a more angled look so you could see depth. More buildings could be constructed and the economic system became more complex. In short SimCity 2000 was a defining point for the series.
After Maxis was bought by EA in 1997 the publisher continued to release new SimCity games, but mostly without Wright's input. Today SimCity 2000 is still considered to be the best in the series.
