10. GarageGames gets Tribes rights (1 of 10)

It's hard to believe but the formation of Activision Blizzard continues to affect the entire game industry in interesting ways. The latest such example was the surprise announcement in early March that GarageGames had bought the rights to the Tribes series of sci-fi shooters. The IP was previously owned by Vivendi Games before its merger into the Activision Blizzard deal in 2008.

While the game series, known for its massive online battles in huge outdoor maps, has retained a cult following over the years the Activision Blizzard management team apparently felt they couldn't do anything with the franchise. GarageGames, which was founded by team members from the former Tribes developer Dynamix, decided to grab the rights. So far it has announced plans to relaunch the first game in the series, Starsiege: Tribes, as a free-to-play game on their browser based InstantAction.com service. But does the company have other Tribes plans for the future? 31/03/09
