Doom series (1 of 10)

id Software created the first person shooter genre with Wolfenstein 3D but the game category really came into its own with id's next game release Doom in 1993. In addition to a single player campaign there was support for four player deathmatch and perhaps more importantly, four player co-op over a LAN.

Four players could battle their way though the entire single player campaign in the original Doom (and in the 1994 sequel Doom II). id's innovation in multiplayer was the first foundation for all other co-op supported shooters. Ironically, id decided not to support co-op play for the PC release of Doom III (although the Xbox version had two player co-op). There's no word if the upcoming Doom IV will include co-op play. 11/11/08
