Rollercoaster Tycoon builds upon the concepts previously touched upon in Chris Sawyer's previous game, Transport Tycoon. These concepts are a clean-yet-sophisticated interface, a gameplay mechanic that grabs players and forces them to continue playing, and a variety of scenarios for players to partake in. While all of these are not done perfectly (the interface is a little convoluted at times, and the scenarios are rather limited in number), they are done well enough that this is a game that most anybody can play with a little bit of perseverance.

The visual and audible aspects of Rollercoaster Tycoon, while definitely being aged, have not aged without grace. The graphics are clean and appealing sprites that convey exactly the right message upon being viewed. It does not feel "old", but "retro". It feels like this is a game that is not meant to be fancy with three-dimensional graphics, not a game that was limited by the technology or artistic ability at the time. The audio is much the same way. While it is a low fidelity aesthetic, it's this late-90s charm that really catches the ear more than anything else. Taken together, you'll be charmed beyond belief! 01/06/09
