Released around the same time as Warcraft 2 and as a prequel to the original Command and Conquer, Red Alert took a radical step into unknown territory in order to differentiate itself from its predecessor as well as its competitor. This step undoubtedly inspired future generations of RTS makers to push forward the asymmetrical balancing system used in Red Alert, leading to great diversification in the genre.
