When Master of Orion 2 was released, it was a huge change from the other games in the genre. It featured a colony management system similar to the incredible Master of Magic, deep customization options, and much more story than its predecessor. It is the base upon which almost every other space 4X game is compared to, from Galactic Civilizations to Sword of the Stars. It was a vast commercial and critical success, but didn't save Simtex from going under eventually, so while it defined the landscape of the genre, it didn't keep the creators working either. Master of Orion 3 was a let-down, and the series ends there. 02/11/09
