Grand Theft Auto 3 came out in a time when the mainstream gamer was not aware of the more underground sandbox games. Rogue-likes were confined to the realm of nerds, while the original Grand Theft Auto games were too arcade-like for tons of players to get into. What Rockstar did was put sandbox in the same bed as narrative, giving players freedom while still guiding them and holding their hand. This served as the introduction people needed to the genre, and made Grand Theft Auto 3 one of the more important games in gaming history.
