If the original Diablo set a precedent for the action-RPG genre, then Diablo II not only evolved it, but set the bar impossibly high. With unique character classes, a massive campaign playable in single- and multiplayer modes, and hordes of powerful items only available while playing on Blizzard's free Battle.net service, Diablo II and its sequel, Lord of Destruction, are still cited today as the game to dethrone for developers interested in creating an action-RPG.

Of course, fans know that regardless of excellent action-RPGs such as Titan Quest and Dungeon Siege, the only true "Diablo II killer" will be Diablo III, currently slated for release... someday. Since June's announcement of the expected third installment, Diablo II has enjoyed a healthy resurgence. Join us for an examination of the elements that have effortlessly kept Diablo II relevant more than eight years after its initial release. 13/10/08
