Myst
It was mysterious, new and different. No we are not talking about Myst. We are talking about the CD-ROM, that new disk-based storage system for PC games that came into its own with the release of Cyan Worlds' seminal adventure game.
First released in 1993 for the Mac and then ported to the PC, Myst's non-violent puzzle solving gameplay, combined with rich (at the time) graphics and art, was an instant sensation. Spawning tons of imitators, it also helped to spur PC gamers to update their machines to include CD-ROM drives. Within a few years, the floppy disk became an old relic.
Cyan released several sequels to Myst, including an MMO game based on the universe. However they never matched the success of the original, which at one time was the highest selling PC game of all time.
