Open beta dates revealed for Star Trek Online

Cryptic Studios' upcoming sci-fi MMO Star Trek Online is less than three months away from launching from its virtual drydock If you are not picked to take part in the game's current closed beta test, there's no reason to worry as Cryptic has now announced that they will hold an open beta for the game.

According to a post on the game's official web site the open beta will begin on January 12 with beta keys to be given out on a first come, first served basis. The open beta period will last until January 26 which will give Cryptic a little breathing room until Star Trek Online officially engages (hehe) on February 2.

Star Trek Online dev video readies battle stations

The universe is a hostile place, and sometimes diplomacy can only go so far, as any experienced star ship captain can attest to. However, new captains don't need to be caught unaware. In this developer video, members of the Cryptic Studios team working on Star Trek Online explain the fundamentals of gameplay in regarding ship-to-ship combat tactics. For starters, players can use phasers to wear down a specific section of the enemy's shields before using photon torpedoes to finish off the job. Yet, there's plenty more covered in this video. Star Trek Online is expected to release in 2010.

Star Trek Online to feature walk-in starship bridges

We have known for some time that Star Trek Online would feature two kinds of modes; starship combat and on foot planetary action. Now the folks at Cryptic Studios have revealed that they will have something that many players have felt was lacking in the game; the way for your avatar to walk around a starship bridge.

As revealed by no less that the Associated Press, the game will have over 20 different types of starship bridges for players to choose from when they design their own Federation starship in the game. The bridge setting will mostly be used for players of the upcoming MMO to chat and socialize. You will be able to say "Engage!" from your own captain's chair when Star Trek Online launches on February 2.

New Star Trek Online box art is action packed

We've mentioned that for the most part the box art for a PC game is usually deathly dull so when we post a news story about one its for a good reason. Developer Cryptic Studios and publisher Atari have just released the final box art for their upcoming MMO Star Trek Online and it's definitely one of the memorable ones.

Indeed, the artwork could have been used for the recent Star Trek movie. The big ships, the big man with his slightly . . . well, you know, large phaser. Below the logo you can see a massive ground battle that no Star Trek movie or TV show has ever depicted. We just hope that the actual game is as good as this box art when it comes out on February 2. Click on the image for much larger look at the artwork.

Star Trek Online system requirements unveiled

Earlier today we brought you an extensive hands-on preview of Star Trek Online, the next MMO from developer Cryptic Studios. Today the game's official web site decided to update its FAQ page and part of that update was to reveal the PC system requirements needed to run the game.

Both the minimal and recommended specs show that the game is DirectX9 based so no matter what happens your rig won't likely need to be a performance hog to run the final version. Star Trek Online is currently in closed beta testing and this week its publisher Atari revealed that it's due for a February 2, 2010 launch date in the US. You can check out the game's system requirements after the jump.

First Look: Star Trek Online

Last week we were given a look at how Cryptic Studios' highly-anticipated spacefaring MMO Star Trek Online was coming along, and let me be the first to say that my fears have been dispelled. STO looks amazing, and from what I saw of it will feature enough interesting gameplay to keep both fans of the franchise and those new to it -- as Jean-Luc Picard might say -- engaged.

Well, you knew some kind of pun was coming, didn't you? Please forgive me. I'm a little giddy with the fact that Big Download has been blessed with three exclusive screenshots from the game -- thanks Atari! Check 'em out below, remember to click on them to see them in full-res, and read all about what we saw after the jump!

Atari confirms February 2 launch date for Star Trek Online

Last week we reported on rumors that Star Trek Online would be released on February 2 in the US. This week publisher Atari officially confirmed those rumors for the upcoming MMO from developer Cryptic Studios along with a release date of February 5 in Europe. The release of the game comes less than five months after Cryptic launched its current MMO project Champions Online.

Just as a reminder, pre-orders for the game are being taken right now with Amazon.com and Gamestop offering some pre-order bonuses for folks who buy the game from their outlets. There's no word yet on the monthly subscription feel for the game nor if Cryptic will offer things like lifetime subscriptions as they did with Champions Online.

Rumor: Final Star Trek Online release date set?

While there is no official outside confirmation of this year, the usually reliable Eurogamer site is reporting that Star Trek Online now has a set release date. According to their article, the US launch for the MMO will occur on February 2, 2010, with the Europeans getting the game few days later on February 5, 2010.

Developer Cryptic Studios had previously confirmed that they would launch the game, based on the massive sci-fi franchise, sometime in the first quarter of 2010. Pre-orders for the game are being taken right now with Amazon.com and Gamestop offering some pre-order bonuses for folks who buy the game from their outlets.

Klingons become the new old enemy in Star Trek Online

In the previous chapter of The Future Past, a series of developer videos that explain the backstory of Star Trek Online, the Klingons were fighting an ever escalating war against the Gorn. Well, it turns out that war lasted for several years, and soon that conflict reached its conclusion, the Klingon Empire set its sights on reclaiming territory lost to the Federation during the war from the original series. Old enemies and once allies of the Federation quickly become new enemies, and in comes a brand new war. Think you're ready for it? A gameplay trailer can be seen after the jump, demonstrating the glorious space battles players can look forward to.

Star Trek Online is expected to release in 2010.

GameStop and Amazon reveal Star Trek Online pre-order bonuses

Cryptic Studios' next MMO game, Star Trek Online, is due for release in the first quarter of 2010 but retailers like Amazon and GameStop are already breaking out pre-order offers for people who want to beat the rush. GameStop's pre-order gives their customers an especially cool in-game treat; a Constitution-class starship just like the Enterprise in the original TV series. GameStop is also listing a Collector's Edition of the game that will come in a collectible box, include an art book and Starfleet comm badge (non-working, we presume) along with a way to give a free a free trial version of the game. The Collector's Edition will cost $79.99

Amazon.com's pre-order bonus for their version of Star Trek Online includes entry into the game's beta test and exclusive Borg Bridge Officer. Not quite as cool as GameStop's deal but we could be wrong.

Star Trek Online's closed beta begins today

Some lucky folks will be entering the final frontier beginning today, at least in a fictional form. Atari sent over word that the closed beta test for Star Trek Online is scheduled to begin sometime today. If you signed up to participate you may be one of the first folks to take a captain's chair and go where no one has gone before (well, except for all of those Trek characters that preceded you but you get the point.

You can still sign up for the beta at the game's official web site. Rep at the game's developer Cryptic Studios have said Star Trek Online is currently due to launch sometime in the first quarter of 2010.

Star Trek Online officially due in first quarter of 2010

We've known that Star Trek Online's release date was sometime in the year 2010 but it looks like developer Cryptic Studios and publisher Atari have now gotten the release date nailed down a little more. In a new chat at Videogamer.com, Cryptic's executive producer Craig Zinkievich stated the sci-fi MMO will be due out in the first quarter of next year.

Even better news for Trekkers who people who just want to play the game is that the closed beta test should begin soon-ish with Zinkievich stating, The closed beta is really just right around the corner. I think that there's a press release that's going to go out in just a couple of days." In the meantime our sister site Massively has posted five new and exclusive screenshots from Star Trek Online to check out today.

Star Trek Online video explains the history of the future

Star Trek Online takes place 2409, thirty years after the events of the movie Star Trek Nemesis. That's a lot of far future history to cover, and this timeline video helps prepare cadets for what to expect from the story. This first chapter covers a conflict between Romulan factions, which is soon interrupted by a Klingon invasion. Soon, the Klingons end up with their own problems as the Gorn march in launch their own war. A lot of information is packed into two and half minutes, so it might be worth watching this a few times to take it all in.
