Sega officially admits to Alpha Protocol delay in new press release

It's been several weeks since the first indications hit that the super-spy RPG Alpha Protocol would not make its planned October 2009 release. It's been over a week since the game's publisher Sega changed the date of the game's launch to Spring 2010 on Sega's web site. Now Sega has finally issued an official press release about the game's tardiness, with Sega of America's CEO s Masanao Maeda saying simply, "We've worked in conjunction with Obsidian Entertainment in making the decision to move Alpha Protocol's ship date to spring 2010 to ensure that we have the best game possible at launch."

Of course this statement doesn't explain why it took Sega so long to finally admit to the delay despite the media, including us, asking Sega repeatedly about the date changes. Obsidian Entertainment's Matthew Rorie does make mention of this issue in a statement on the game's official message boards, saying, "Sorry again for the long delay in putting out something official. It was frustrating for everyone involved, including you guys, I'm sure." He adds, " . . . just keep in mind that, in the end, this is going to help Alpha Protocol achieve the greatest success possible for it. The game is going to get a good coat of polish to it, and it's also hopefully going to become more visible to the gaming community at large. So that's a win-win for everyone. It sucks that it won't be coming out for a while, but it'll be awesome when it does."

Sega finally shows "Spring 2010" release for Alpha Protocol

A few weeks ago we reported that online game retailers were showing the upcoming super-spy RPG Alpha Protocol as being pushed back from its planned October release day to sometime in June. At the time we emailed the game's publisher Sega for comment but never received a response.

Today Sega, again without comment, finally shifted the release dates of the Obsidian Entertainment-developed game to "Spring 2010" on its official web site. As our sister site Joystiq points out, it showed that the game was "out now" earlier this morning. There's still no word on why the game was delayed from either Sega or Obsidian although their silence seems to suggest a massive issue prevented the game from shipping this month.
