BigCast eats turkey, gets sleepy

The problem with having a Canadian host is they forget about American holidays! Well, the BigCast has fell victim to the holiday glut and passed out on the couch watching football. So our planned "Big Show" has been delayed. Don't fret BigCast fans, the show next week will cover our impressions of the biggest titles released this holiday season and news from around the wonderful work of video gaming. Now, where is our pillow... we're still sleepy. Turducken is so delicious!

BigCast Special, next week!

You may notice that this week the BigCast has gone missing in action. Don't fear, next week's planned show is going to be an extra special episode where bloggers throughout the Joystiq Network give their two cents on the recent crop of big name PC releases. Left 4 Dead, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space and Fallout 3 are all going to be planned segments in a hefty show that includes eight servings of your weekly podcast requirement.

Add to that a standard episode format which will showcase the best from around Big Download, Would You Rather of epic proportions and maybe a few non-Joystiq guest hosts.

It's an episode so big we couldn't even contain it to bring it to you this week ... that and we needed more time to get a feel for Left 4 Dead. Okay, we're lying. We're just really busy playing Left 4 Dead. Can you blame us?

BigCast 018 -- Escorting

Just our luck. We finally hit 18 and we're a week late to vote! Joystiq's Ross Miller and AOL GameDaily's Robin Yang join the crew for a BigCast where we ask, "Can non-AAA titles really stand a chance during the holiday season?" Discuss the most overused and annoying gaming conventions from escort missions to regenerating health and throw another trio of Would You Rather questions in every direction. It's alive! It's the BigCast.

BigCast 017 -- Expletive Deletive

Do not adjust your Internets. The BigCast has returned with another epic adventure. This week we can't stop talking about adventure games, what qualifies the genre and who plays them? Think of games that we should have played but never got around to (slowly listen as the conversation goes completely off track) and throw down for another edition of Would You Rather? It's a brand new day in a brand new America, this is the BigCast!

BigCast 016 -- Weekend Edition

After a few bumps in the road the BigCast returns with three segments of PC gaming fun. In the first segment we talk about GTA IV and if it still means anything as it preps for a PC release and what we want and fear for the new BioShock from 2K Marin. Segment two brings the team into the seedy underbelly of sex and violence in games. In the last segment we ask Would You Rather, and discuss which game from our past has helped shape our future. We're late but we're live, on the BigCast!

BigCast's Big Delay

'Till the season for games. A lot of games. With so many games in our sights and so much coverage on our plate we sometimes get a little backed up, this is one of those weeks. Unfortunately, this week's episode of the BigCast has been delayed. Episode 016 will find its way onto your MP3 device of choice soon with a return of Would You Rather, a discussion on sex and violence in games and our usual (sometimes) witty banter.

BigCast 015 -- Breaking Old News

This week on the BigCast we tackle PC gaming optimization and the issues associated with settings, give our live-as-they-happened thoughts on Star Wars: The Old Republic and ask if it's possible for something to go terribly wrong and in a BigBonus segment talk about Heroes ... yeah, the television show. We're going off topic, here on the BigCast!

BigCast 014 -- Version 2.0

This week the BigCast returns with a new format; it's all about segments! Spanning over five segments and a handful of Big Download and Joystiq staffers, this BigCast is our ... uh, biggest ever! This week we talk Diablo III, ask 'Why do people think PC gaming is on the outs?' Head over to the indie scene of the industry and in a brand new segment we ask the tough question in 'Would You Rather?' Prepare yo' self, it's the BigCast!

BigCast gets rebooted

You may notice the BigCast is missing this week. Don't worry, we're still going strong but we're taking the show offline this week for a format reboot. Next week the show will be a little different with new segments and more than the usual cast of characters. We're reworking the show to make it more enjoyable, more informative and more ... well, everything! It's going to be a Bigger and Better BigCast -- we hope!

Have a suggestion for a segment? Want to email us your thoughts?

InstantAction open beta now available for Mac users

Mac users get ready to stand up and cheer or ... at least smile. InstantAction, the 3D browser-based online gaming site, has extended its current beta to Mac users. Established in late March 2008 by developer GarageGames, InstantAction treats PC users to a collection of free "console-quality games," all within a web browser.

Launching with four titles, the Mac version of InstantAction doesn't have as robust a library as its PC counterpart but is expected to expand. Users are required to sign up to play but registration is free. Available now for InstantAction Mac is: the first-person shooter Fallen Empire: Legions; future-sport, Rokkitball; the tank warfare title ThinkTanks and fan favorite Marble Blast Online.

Sacred Gold added to GameTap's free library

The recent sale of Gametap to European based Metaboli isn't stopping the service from adding new titles as it normally would. Just added to the free-to-play, ad-based version of the online service is the award-winning action role-playing game, Sacred Gold.

Originally released in 2004, Sacred Gold allows players to select from eight character classes in an epic adventure to save the magical continent of Ancaria. Often compared to Blizzard's Diablo series, Sacred Gold was hailed for its imaginative story that sent each character class on its own specific missions.

Sarcred Gold consists of the original Sacred, the free expansion Sacred Plus and the 2005 expansion Sacred Underworld. For the low price of free -- in exchange for seeing a few advertisments -- playing the classic RPG is a fantastic value. Besides, you need something to hold you over until Diablo III comes out, right?

Send Garriott a message to earn money for charity

Very soon, famed game designer Richard Garriott will be launched into space -- yes in sanctioned rocket ship. Famously known for creating the Ultima series, Garriott's fascination with space came at a young age and on October 12 he will partake in an ... interesting mission beyond our planet to fulfill his dreams. Operation Immortality is bringing data from Earth's greatest achievements into space so our legacy may live on forever. Among the important data? The genetic codes of such world renowned people as news host Stephen Colbert and 2008 Playboy Cyber Girl of the Year, Jo Garcia.

Wait. What? Really? Anyway ... since space travel is considered pretty dangerous -- what with the whole rocket thing -- Razer has created a site where anyone from around the internet can send a message of well wished to Garriott before his shuttle leaves on October 12. For every message sent from October 1 until October 12, Razer will donate one-quarter (of a dollar) to the Challenger Learning Center, which seeks to enhance space education for children.

Those who participate also have a chance to win Razer branded gear. Three lucky winners will walk away with a Razer Lachesis mouse and a Razer Destructor mouse pad each, personally autographed by Richard. Twenty winners will also each receive a Razer Moray, Razer's newly launched in-ear noise canceling gaming earphone.

Send in those messages and lets get some money in a great program for kids.

Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 2 priced at $15

Hothead Games and the team at Penny Arcade have been hard at work to continue the adventures of Gabe, Tycho and you -- as a rake-wielding revenge seeker. Today, the digital download site Play Greenhouse has confirmed the upcoming second episode will be released at $14.95. Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One was released at $19.95, which drew criticism with some gamers, and was widely considered a success.

Touting a continuing storyline for an "Episode One or new character," deeper customization, and multiple difficulty settings, the upcoming role-playing game is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated downloadable titles of the year. Slash $5 off the price off the sequel to a game we enjoyed and give us promise us more content? Yes please. It looks like Hothead is pulling out all the stops to ensure Episode Two makes an even bigger splash when it releases.
