WRUP: QuakeCon edition

- Rafe Brox: WoW, Supreme Commander / Forced Alliance, Dyson
- David Craddock: I'm covering QuakeCon, so.... nothing. Because when I get home on Sunday, I'll be writing QC-related features. Catch me next weekend!
- Kyle Horner: I'll be zapping everything in sight with tesla coil weapons in the Red Alert 3 beta!
- Steven Wong: I too will be playing the Red Alert 3 beta. Maybe some Team Fortress 2 if I can find the time.
- James Murff: I'm going to be played the Eegra Shindig games this weekend. Also gonna be relaxing with some Civilization IV. Someone I know just recently got hooked into one-turn fever through Civ Revolutions, so I have to show her the power of Civ 4.
- Krystalle Voecks: I'll be noodling around in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and EVE Online when I get the chance.
WRUP: Pre-E3 edition
Ah, E3. The time of year when game writers go into overdrive. The next week ahead will involve long nights, lots of transcription, and spending quality time with the lovely and talented C8H10N4O2 -- caffeine. We here at Big Download will be no exception to this, and as such, we bring you the E3 roundup for WRUP; the "dude, where's my plane" edition. Our fearless Managing Editor, Steven Wong suggested a networked game of Diablo II before we all jumped on planes this weekend, but several of us who still had packing to do just looked at him funny. As such, he's been hanging out in Civ4 and City of Heroes. John Callaham figured he'd take the "jump in, frag someone, jump out" route and opted for a little Team Fortress 2 to ease the stress. David Craddock was one of the people who thought Steven had a good idea, though and replied to Steven's request with "Is there any other game besides Diablo II? Yes - there's Diablo III. But that's not out yet. So I play Diablo II. Always. For long time."
On the writer side of the table, both Rafe Brox and Xav de Matos expressed plans to spend some time in WoW. Of course, Rafe said he'd also be playing with power tools, and Xav expressed the intent to play the "omg, get caught up on features" game, which this blogger certainly knows all too well and will be joining him in playing. James Murff is relaxing (not having to jump on a plane) with some zombie love in Survival Crisis Z. When he's not buried in brains, he'll be hopping between Team Fortress 2 and Dwarf Fortress. And of course, most of the crew will be playing the uber-leet Sleep Deprivation game. Luckily, we've all managed to beat that game several times over and we've memorized the content.
So, readers -- What aRe yoU Playing this next week? Will you play Sleep Deprivation with us and stay glued to the tubes for all the news, or will you instead kick back with your favorite game and relax?
The MMO week in a minute

First Impressions: Requiem: Bloodymare We've been talking about this game for months now, and Requiem: Bloodymare is finally available to play. Hailed as the first horror MMO, there are definitely aspects of R:B that are pretty gruesome. |

Massively interview: KingsIsle on Wizard101 We recently had the chance to check up on KingsIsle and talk to them about their three-year conjuration, Wizard101. We sat down with the studio's director, Todd Coleman, to discuss what's in store ... |

Blizzard responds to amicus brief in MDY bot suit Last month, digital rights advocacy group Public Knowledge filed an amicus curaie -- "friend of the court" -- brief regarding Blizzard's argument that a user making a memory copy of the World of Warcraft software for purposed of using MDY's Glider program to bot violated their terms of use and their copyright. |

Age of Conan surpasses 700k registered users We've been quite taken aback by the responses many players direct at Funcom's Age of Conan. We're not sure if the accusations of the game being a "beta version" or just a "total POS" are the product of unrealistic expectations ... |

Conan's female avatar DPS bug will take weeks to correct A few weeks back our own Adrian Bott took a close look at a very ... unique ... bug in Age of Conan. It seems that differing animation cycles in the game have resulted in an unforseen side effect: female avatars do less damage then male ones. At the time, the Funcom developers said they'd let us know as soon as they could about a fix. |
WRUP: Speed freak edition
While last week saw the team spending time in Mass Effect, this week finds the team split between the standby favorite of Team Fortress 2 and the new hotness that is GRID. With awesome action like GRID has, nobody can really blame them, though. Coming up hot on their heels was Armageddon Empires.
Our resident indie fiend, James Murff said he'll be spending this weekend playing Armageddon Empires, Team Fortress 2, and checking out Zombie Panic! Source. Kyle Horner is taking a chunk of his weekend off from PC gaming to dive into Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition -- but he assures us that he'll be planning everything on his laptop. When not rolling the bones, Kyle said he'll be relaxing in TF2 as well. Both David Craddock and Stephen Wong plan to spend most of their time tearing it up in GRID. Stephen noted that he'll probably also spend some time in Armageddon Empires, EverQuest II and will probably give Devil May Cry 4 another whirl if time allows. I'm on the road this weekend, so I'm limited to gaming on my laptop. Thus, I'll be spending time in EVE Online when I do actually manage some gaming. For this weekend, given all the great games out recently, What aRe yoU Playing?

WRUP: Nowhere nearly enough Mass Effect edition

This has been an exciting week in PC gaming! The release of Mass Effect, more information on the highly anticipated StarCraft II, and Valve has decided to let us back things up via the upcoming Steam Cloud service. (This is, of course, after most of us spent last week playing On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode One.) Going into this weekend we figured it would be a no-brainer as to what most of the Big Download staff would be playing....
Steven Wong, our fearless all around bad-mutha and Managing Editor is playing Mass Effect as we expected, but will be adding a side of Age of Conan and possibly some City of Heroes or City of Villains in the mix. Samuel Axon, blogger and caffeine fiend will be kickin' it old-school in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Deus Ex. John Callaham and David Craddock, aside from being our esteemed (and crazy workaholic) leads, will both be spending time playing on Steam. John's planning on spending time in Team Fortress 2, and David's got his sights set on jumping into the Get a Life mod for Half-Life 2. (Well, and he'll be checking out some mods for WarCraft III for an upcoming column, but that's work.) As for me, I have a copy of Mass Effect for my PC, and of course will be continuing my own all-over-the-place MMOG adventures for Massively.
How about you all? Will you be jumping into Mass Effect as well, or are you still playing through OtRSPoD? Perhaps you're more interested in fragging the crap out of people in TF2 after a (not very) long week? Tell us, What aRe yoU Playing this weekend?

Becoming betrothed in Bejeweled
Want an excellent way to get your girlfriend involved in gaming? Get her hooked on clicky web-based games like PopCap's insanely successful casual title, Bejeweled. Want to make sure that not only will she continue to love gaming, but stick around and geek out with you for years to come? 'Hack' her favorite game and use it to propose to her!Sound far-fetched? We thought so too, until we heard the story of Bernie Peng, who got creative when it came to popping the question to his other half, Tammy Li. After working for a month or so on a homebrew Nintendo DS port of Li's favorite PC game, he passed it along to her claiming he 'found' it. After she hit the required score, a ring dropped down on-screen -- something totally different from her usual gaming! That's when Peng asked her to marry him, she said yes, and the rest became gaming geek history.
In an interesting aside to this story, PopCap Games, makers of Bejeweled and many other highly addictive time-sucking clicky games, have decided to fly the happy couple to Seattle for a visit to their offices as part of their Honeymoon. (Getting angry about a cool port would be a bad call, after all.) They are also giving the happy couple lots of free copies of Bejeweled to give away as wedding favors. We sense many more clicky-game addicts will be in the making as the happy couple kick off their new life together.
