Rumor: Crysis 2 PC build leaked to pirate download sites [Update]

Crysis 2 was still over a month away from its official release but if online rumors are true it looks like some people are playing a late development build of Crykek's first person shooter well beforehand. According to a post on the Facepunch web site, the build started showing up on certain PC game pirate web sites and contains the full game and, perhaps more important, the DRM files that handle the game's online authentication. The message board post also has a couple of screenshots from the pirate build as proof the game is out in the open.

It's currently unknown how this build got onto the net but its always sad when something like this happens as it is bound to not only affect sales of the game itself but also cause publisher to try to create more complex DRM set ups that will just upset legit consumers. We have emailed both Crytek and publisher Electronic Arts for comment.

Update: EA sent over the following statement:

Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22. Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series' signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community.

I had no interest in Crysis 2 up until this leak. Now that I've had a chance to try it, even an incomplete an quite buggy build of it, I plan on buying it as soon as it's released. In fact from what I've seen (I'm a member of Facepunch) this is more positive advertising for the game than a negative blow. If you read through the thread on Facepunch about it (http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1058902-Crysis-2-leaked-49-days-early.) you'll see that nearly everyone is saying this makes them want to buy it even more.Posted at 4:14PM on Feb 12th 2011 by A new fan
