Valve's Gabe Newell praises Intel's new Core processors as "a game changer"
According to a story over at the International Business Times web site, Newell praised the technology in the new Intel Core processors stating that Portal 2, due out in April, was made with the new processor in mind. He's quoted as saying, "It's a real game changer for us. This allows for a console like experience on the PC." We are not quite sure what that means, exactly. We will email Valve to get a little clarification.

"This allows for a console like experience on the PC."
Um... I play PC games so I don't have a console-like experience.Posted at 11:07AM on Jan 6th 2011 by HappyFunBall
The "console-like gaming experience" includes 12 year olds with foul mouths over online multiplayer voice chat, inferior controls leading to a significant disadvantage against mouse+keyboard players, less control over the audio/video settings of your game, and an overall less-fun experience (at least in first-person games).Posted at 11:28AM on Jan 6th 2011 by Covarr
Could it mean the ease of programming on these new processors? This is kinda a weird statement, but Valve's gotta have a good reason for it.Posted at 9:46PM on Jan 6th 2011 by Nerdman
Console experience?
There's two ways to answer this. PC gaming is far superior to console gaming, we don't want a "console experience".
And for most of the games released today, we already get a console experience, Shoddy-ass ports of console games so quickly shat out they barely have graphical options, let alone any improvements over the console versions. In fact, quite the opposite. We get lousy porting from a controller to a keyboard and mouse, which is sloppy. Framerate problems, and P2P servers.Posted at 2:55AM on Jan 7th 2011 by Drakkenfyre
whoa whoa whoa! Calm down dudes, pretty sure he's referring to the consoles processor. Ya know, since he's talking about a processor. He's probably referring to how things are computed and piped through the processor (its much more optimized on the consoles.) Or do you guys honestly think that switching to a new processor will cause racist 12-year-olds and shoddy controls to appear?Posted at 2:09PM on Jan 7th 2011 by Sam
We already have racist 12 year olds and shoddy controls. Most games today are ported from console versions, while the original manufacturer sneers, and removes content and spits it out, acting as if they were doing us a favor.
So a comment about "bringing the console experience to the pc" isn't very welcome.
Things on a console aren't optimized simply because of the CPU, they are more optimized because it's a closed system, and they can eek out as much power from the system as possible, without having to worry about differing system configurations.Posted at 3:41PM on Jan 7th 2011 by Drakkenfyre
....
He means that people with one of these CPUs in their PC can be confident about putting a game in and having it just work - i.e. the integrated graphics will finally have some grunt.Posted at 7:30AM on Jan 11th 2011 by c2538887

Don't you mean Sandy Bridge?Posted at 10:39AM on Jan 6th 2011 by Kunikos
