EA Games head says single-player only games era "is finished"

You had better have a good internet connection at home, at least according to what an Electronic Arts exec stated in a recent interview. Develop chatted with Frank Gibeau, the head of the publisher's EA Games label who stated, "Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at."

So does that mean there's no room for a big single player only RPG like, say, the games in the Fallout series? Not according to Gibeau who states that all of EA's studio heads feel there should be some kind of online component, He states, "They're very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you're out. I think that model is finished."

this is truly an assinine remark made by someone who probably gets paid more than he is worth. the majority of games i play and love are single player experiences. while i do enjoy a good multiplayer game here and there, single player games will continue to earn my money as long as experiences are fun and engaging. someone aughta fire that dipshit. this is like saying the comedy-romance genre of movies "is finished" sure not every movie is a comedy-romance, but that doesn't mean it has no place in the entertainment industry!

i remember reading similar threads in forums, articles in game magazines way back in 1999/2000 with all the quake3/unreal tournament craze and early mmo's. but single player only games never went away.Posted at 8:51AM on Dec 9th 2010 by perestroika

Moronic. Absolutely moronic. There's a huge chunk of us 'gamers' in our late 20s and early 30s that prefer that pause button to going AFK and potentially 'ruining' the rest of your gameplay for that night. We want to plug in and plug out without hassle. And we WILL go BACKwards to our OLD games for that effect before moving forward to MMO type universes. We don't have time to be held accountable to another *person* in a fantasy land when we already have responsibilities on our plates.
