Confiming the many rumors that have been running around, Electronic Arts has just announced plans to release Darkspore, the previously hinted at sci-fi action-RPG from developer EA Maxis that' based on technology that was first developed for the 2008 game Spore.

The game itself has your player character dealing with an invasion of a species known as the Darkspore (catchy) who want to transform planetary populations into creatures like themselves, kind of an organic borg. The Spore Creature Creature is used in the game to give your character access to tons of options for organic weapons. The game will feature both solo and co-op support for the campaign as well as player vs player battle arenas.
