When Bethesda Softworks released Fallout 3 for the PC back in 2008 the developer decided to support Microsoft's Games For Windows Live system to update the game and also to offer the five downloadable mini-expansion packs to their open world RPG. However it looks like the next game in the series, Fallout New Vegas, is switching over to a rival system for the PC version.
As confirmed by a Bethesda Softworks rep in a fan Q&A posted on the Fallout message boards, Fallout New Vegas in its PC incarnation will use Valve's Steamworks tools when its released. That will likely include using Steam to auto-update the game as well as providing for any future downloadable content packs. It also likely means that the game won't be appearing on rival downloadable PC game sites like Direct2Drive, Impulse and GamersGate.
