Peter Molyneux: Facebook is causing PC gaming to be "reborn"

The team at Lionhead Studios has mostly concentrated on making console games for the Xbox 360 in the last few years but its founder Peter Molyneux started out as a PC game designer, making classic games like Dungeon Keeper and others. However, in a video chat with our sister site Switched Molyneux stated that the PC as a platform for games is getting a second life (so to speak).

And just what is causing this rebirth of PC games? Facebook. Molyneux feels that the massive player success of games like Farmville shows that "gaming is being reborn on the PC." He adds, "I don't see why all those others like AAA blockbusters can't incorporate that sort of level of interaction."

*weeps* If Farmville is the rebirth of PC gaming, then I say just let it die. There are plenty of other hobbies for me. Might be time to start reading more.

Facebook games are the lowest tier of gaming on the PC, and he thinks that it's the best thing from PC? Just an other clueless console developer having no clue what makes PC gaming work. I think people too quickly want to dismiss facebook games without considering what their positives are, primarily the social interaction. You can perhaps scoff at Farmville, but what happens when someone does a Facebook remake of X-Com, complete with the level of social interactivity of a Farmville or Mafia Wars?

Chimp, when someone actually does that, then yes people will accept it.

Plain and simple though, the man behind Farmville has openly admitted to using whatever he could to rip off as many people as possible. If that is the future of "PC Gaming", then I'm not surprised Molyneux is behind it, considering the man would say whatever it took to sell a game, and sell his mother out as well.

its because its a massive multiplayer environment which cant be done on consoles

The final statement he makes in this note is the most compelling indication of how to boost success of AAA games or mainstream titles...I think the 'social networking' aspect of these facebook apps integrated into PC games could be part of a major renaissance...Posted at 7:51AM on Mar 27th 2010 by James
