Stardock's Impulse PC game download service has certainly carved a solid niche for itself in the PC game digital download market. Now Stardock is introducing a new collection of PC game developer tools called Impulse::Reactor (and yes, the two colons are apparently deliberate in the title). Stardock CEO Brad Wardell called the new set of tools "revolutionary".
That's pretty high on the hype scale but Wardell says there are several reasons for such a claim. For one, putting Impulse::Reactor's features in a game (like achievements, copy protection and others) is an automated process that will generate the source code for you. It also allows game developers to put in the code without having to use a client program. Finally Impulse::Reactor will be free to use with the only condition being that any game that uses the code will have to be made available to download via Stardock's Impulse service (although it can also be made available on any other service too). The beta will be made available to developers later this summer.

This looks quite like a lame knockoff of Steamworks. They don't have the best reputation you know.Posted at 1:25PM on Mar 18th 2010 by Steamwork Knockoff

That sounds like something Steamworks should have become long ago, yet it's still stuck in the past and refuses to evolve and get rid of client dependency. Good work Stardock, I hope your solution will become quickly adopted. Posted at 4:04PM on Mar 16th 2010 by JM
