As previously rumored, LucasArts has just announced plans at a GDC 2010 event to release The Secret of Monkey Island 2: Special Edition, a new graphical remake of the classic 1991 adventure game. Our sister site Joystiq reports that the remake will be a little different than 2009's relaunch of the first Monkey Island game. In addition to the old point-and-click gameplay players will be able to move lead character Guybrush Threepwood around a bit. Expect to hear developer commentary in the new remake too (shades of Valve's recent games). The Secret of Monkey Island 2: Special Edition will be released for the PC and other platforms sometime this summer. We will post up some screenshots of the remake as soon as we get them.
In related news, the first Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition game will be ported to the Mac OS (no date was revealed) and will soon be available on Telltale Games's web store as well as the InstantAction.com web browser game site.
Update: The game's official web site has now launched and we now have some screenshots that compare scenes from the original with the remake in the gallery below.

Great! Hopefully they don't use the bullshit interface they used for the first remake. Keyboard buttons for inventory and verbs??? Really?!? They couldn't have though of any sort of way to access those menus with the mouse? Or just had the interfaces on screen like it originally had? I had to play through using the classic graphics and only occasionally switching to see the redone scenes because of the interface mess.
